SALISBURY — A massive oak tree estimated to be 100 years old fell today in the 600 block of Maupin Avenue, taking with it power, cable and phone lines.

Firefighters, police officers and a Duke Energy representative were on the scene around 1 p.m. The city's street department was expected to help clear the road in the Fulton Heights neighborhood.

The tree fell across three yards, and branches blocked the street. The tree pulled down several power lines and broke utility poles. Additional power lines were compromised, according to Capt. D.M. Nichols.

Firefighters went door to door to check on residents and warn them to stay inside until Duke Energy could de-energize the downed power lines.

No one was in immediate danger, Nichols said.
