SALISBURY — During Monday’s meeting, the Rowan-Salisbury Board of Education will consider a proposal for a business and marketing academy at East Rowan High School

The school board will meet Monday at 4 p.m. — one hour earlier than its usual meeting time — at 110 S. Long St. in East Spencer.

According to documents submitted by East Rowan Principal Kelly Sparger, 43 percent of non-business students said they are interested in a business or marketing career, and 24 percent said they were interested in taking business or marketing courses. Another 37 percent said they were already taking those courses.

When business and marketing students at East Rowan were asked if they were interested in learning more advanced business and marketing skills, 61 percent said yes.

In his submitted proposal, Sparger said students would be required to complete seven credits in business and marketing courses, actively participate in Future Business Leaders of America and complete two service learning or work-based programs.

The program would give students opportunities to earn multiple industry certifications, earn North Carolina community college credit and high school credit at the same time, create an electronic portfolio and participate in field trips and partnerships with colleges and local businesses.

Also during Monday’s meeting, the school board plans to:

• Discuss and vote on a 2013-14 budget request after hearing a review by Chief Financial Officer Tara Trexler.

• Consider a field trip request from West Rowan High School for a state masonry competition in Greensboro from April 24-26.

• Discuss the 2012-13 State Transportation (School Bus) Report after a presentation by Transportation Director Judy Burris.

• Consider approval of a 2012-13 financial audit contract with the board’s current auditing firm, Dixon Hughes Goodman PLLC. The proposed contract is for $38,400, which represents an increase of $2,400 from the prior year’s fee.

• Meet in closed session regarding the March personnel report for 2013, a student transfer, closed session minutes from Feb. 25, pending litigation and a student incident.
