The Chapeleers

SALISBURY — The Chapeleers will present a Southern gospel concert at 7 p.m. today.

Children’s activities are planned and refreshments served after concert.

The concert is at Bethany Bible Chapel, 4260 Stokes Ferry Road.

Wittenberg fundraiser

GRANITE QUARRY — There will be an Easter dinner and silent auction fundraiser from 5 to 7:15 p.m. today at Wittenberg Lutheran Church. It is sponsored by the East Rowan Chapter of Thrivent and Wittenberg Lutheran Church.

The dinner will consist of ham, macaroni and cheese, green beans, dessert and drink.

All proceeds will go toward purchasing new playground equipment for Wittenberg Lutheran Preschool.

Mt. Olivet events

CONCORD — Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church’s annual bake sale is from 9 a.m. to noon today. All proceeds will to go missions.

During the 11 a.m. sanctuary service there will be children’s processional of palms with 1st Kids and then 14 youth will go through Confirmation.

SALISBURY — Palm Sunday at St. Paul’s begins with a palm procession into the church from the Joslin House (behind the church) at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bishop Gregg, Assistant Bishop of North Carolina will leads an Anglican Rosary at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Joslin House, followed by the Bishop’s consecration of the Chapel of the Saints Elizabeth at St. Paul’s at 6 p.m. The nigh will conclude with a reception provided by the Daughters of the King for Bishop Gregg and his wife Kathy at 7 p.m.

SALISBURY — Salem Lutheran Church’s Palm/Passion Sunday service is at 10:30 a.m., including a palm processional and a dramatic reading of Luke’s story of Jesus’ Passion.

The Resurrection celebration and Easter Egg hunt is from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Sunday, and will include a puppet show by River’s Edge Puppet Ministry; an Easter egg hunt for children in sixth grade and younger. There will be music, games and dinner.

The Maundy Thursday service includes Holy Communion ands foot washing. The Good Friday Service will feature the drama “I Was There...” at 7 p.m.

Following worship is a spaghetti dinner in the new building.

KANNAPOLIS — First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis presents the Holy Week cantata “Upon this Rock” Sunday during the 11 a.m. service. The program, created by Pepper Choplin, looks at the life of Jesus, particularly the events of Holy Week, from the viewpoint of the Apostle Peter.

Music will be provided by the Chancel Choir, along with members of the Piedmont Choral Society. The Music Ministry is under the direction of Dr. Don Simmons. Peter will be played by Mike Freeman.

On Maundy Thursday, the Mount Zion UCC Players and Chancel Choir will present “The Living Last Supper” in the new building at 7 p.m.

On Good Friday, members of Mount Zion UCC will share in the “Way of the Cross” walk, which begins at noon in front of First Baptist Church.

SALISBURY — Mount Tabor United Methodist Church will celebrate Sunday at 11 a.m. with a Palm and Passion Sunday experience, where children are invited to join in waving palm branches in celebration of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem.

Those present will have an opportunity to place worries, fears, concerns, guilt and other issues on the cross in preparation for the Easter celebration.

Maundy Thursday Communion service is in the fellowship hall with music by the Chancel Choir.

The Good Friday service includes an anthem by the Chancel Choir with flute soloist Linda White.

The All Male Choir of Statesville will present its annual spring concert at Henderson Grove Missionary Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Sunday.

The choir is known for its “down-home style” gospel singing and has been performing for over 25 years.

The Piedmont Singing Men will be at Community Baptist Church at 6 p.m.

Providence United Methodist Church will hold its Maundy Thursday Service at 7 p.m. Communion will be served.

“The Stations of the Cross,” a series of paintings by Dr. Walter Hood, is on display through April in the St. John’s Art Gallery, adjacent to the chapel.

Joint Maundy Thursday service

KANNAPOLIS — First Presbyterian and Bethpage Presbyterian Churches, both of Kannapolis, will conduct a joint Maundy Thursday communion service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the First sanctuary.

This service, which marks the events in the Upper Room and on Good Friday, will include the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper and a Tenebrae service.

The service will be led by the churches’ pastors, the Rev. Darryl Evans of First Presbyterian and Rev. Ellen Campbell-Gardner of Bethpage Presbyterian.

Special music will be provided by a joint choir and also by the Praise Ringers Hand bell Choir.

Tenebrae means “shadows” or “darkening,” in the Tenebrae service involves a gradual darkening of the sanctuary as the last words of Jesus are read.

SPENCER — The Spencer Community Council of Churches celebrates Holy Week with a joint Palm Sunday service at 6 p.m. on March 24; Spencer Presbyterian hosts, the Rev. Richard Gross, Oakdale Baptist, guest preacher.

During Holy Week the council hosts a noon service each week day. Bring a bag lunch and stay for fellowship each afternoon following worship. Drinks and desserts will be provided by that day’s host church.
