Catawba alumna memorialized with scholarship
SALISBURY — A new endowed scholarship established at Catawba College memorializes Anna Katherine Gregory Vance, a 2003 alumna who died in April 2011. The scholarship was established by her husband, Dr. Shawn L. Vance of Kannapolis.
Preference for the scholarship will be given to female, Christian students who major or minor in political science or dance. Anna majored in political science and minored in dance at Catawba. In 2001, she was one of the co-founders of the Delphinian Society at Catawba, a campus organization dedicated to providing academic, service and social opportunities for females.
Born in Greenville, S.C., she was the daughter of Stephen “Steve” Warren Gregory and Nanette Swanson Gregory of Weaverville. She graduated from Dunedin High School in Dunedin, Fla., in 1999. After her graduation from Catawba, she had worked as a child support enforcement agent at the Cabarrus County Department of Social Services, then as a substitute teacher at Footprints Christian Academy in Kannapolis.

Catawba students and faculty attend meeting
Two faculty members and several students from the psychology department at Catawba College attended the annual meeting of the Southeastern Psychological Association in Atlanta, Ga., March 13-16.
Those attending included Dr. Sheila Brownlow and Dr. Erin Wood, professors of psychology at Catawba, and students Ashley Acken of Marietta, Pa.; Nathaniel (Shane) Binkley of Cleveland; Emily Carlton of Winston-Salem; Tim Conner of Statesville; Bransyn Motley of Salisbury; Maura Pantone of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Benjamin Patterson of Rockwell; Cinthia Rodriguez of Salisbury; and Leah Ryan of Westborough, Mass.
Some of the Catawba group made presentations. The titles of the presentations and those participating included “Does Saying Mean (not) Doing? Articulation of Alcohol Policies and Underage Drinking,” Maura Pantone and Sheila Brownlow; “Does Ego Depletion Increase Implicit Egotism via Name Letter Matching?” Ashley Acken, Maura Pantone and Sheila Brownlow; “Welcome to Academe: Trials and Tribulations of the New Academic,” panel organizer/chair, Erin Wood, Catawba College, with Maureen Matthews, Saint Leo University, Jana Hackathorn, Murray State University, Lisa Blalock, University of West Florida, and Joan Brugman, Belmont Abbey College.
Prospective teachers participate in workshop
Catawba College students pursuing careers in teaching participated in a free workshop on campus that will help better prepare them for their pending jobs. Catawba’s teacher education department hosted the Spencer Kagan workshop, “From Survival to Success: Essential Strategies for New Teachers” at the Center for the Environment on March 14 and 15 for juniors and seniors majoring in education.
The workshop relayed a variety of cooperative learning techniques and instructional strategies for use in the beginning years of teaching. The strategies focused on creating a nurturing and safe class community in which students are best suited to learn. These strategies also reinforced processing and critical thinking, as well as social and team-building skills.
Professor chairs session at conference in Spain
Dr. John “Jack” Green, an associate professor of marketing in Catawba College’s Ketner School of Business, chaired a session and made a presentation at an international conference held in Valencia, Spain, during the college’s spring break.
Green attended the 2013 International Technology, Education and Development Conference (INTED 2013) March 4-6 and chaired the “Research in Education” session there. He also presented a paper at this conference titled, “Using University Brand Asset Value to Forecast Enrollment.”
Green has had several recent successes, including the publication of his first eBook Primer. His “Get Going!! – Learn to Use IBM / SPSS Modeler by Running Logistic Regression,” is now auto-delivered wirelessly, published for Amazon Kindle and Kindle for PC/Android operating systems. He also solicited IBM for a $100,000 site license for SPSS/ IBM Modeler which was renewed for use in labs on the Catawba campus.
Manners and social graces classes
Registration is now open for programs that aim to keep the social traditions of graciousness, courtesy, kindness and basic manners alive and well. The programs are offered at the following three levels:
• Manners Made Easy: Grades 2 through 4
• Salisbury Junior Cotillion Club: Grades 5 through 8
• High School Cotillion Social Club: Grades 9 through 12
Depending on the age group, classes will cover such topics as introductions and greetings, personal manners, table manners and dinner parties, restaurant manners, polite conversation, telephone and technology etiquette, people manners, thank-you notes, ballroom dancing (cha-cha, waltz, shag, foxtrot and more), mingling, college prep, dating, interviews and other basic social skills.

Salisbury Academy Battle of the Books
Salisbury Academy students earned first place in the Elementary Battle of the Books competition.
Students traveled to Greensboro Day school Wednesday, where they competed against Canterbury School, Greensboro Day School, Greensboro Montessori School, Sacred Heart Catholic School and Westchester Country Day School.
The purpose of the Elementary Battle of the Books program is to encourage reading by all students at the elementary school level, according to the North Carolina Library Association. Students, regardless of ability, are exposed to quality literature representing a variety of literary styles and viewpoints by prominent authors in the area of young adult literature. Salisbury Academy Librarian Angela Graham explained that the event is like a quiz bowl for reading. “The game-like format creates interest and excitement in reading for our students,” she said. “We are so proud of the team’s hard work.”
The Salisbury Academy Elementary Battle of the Books team, coached by Graham, Melissa Brown and Pat Foley, consisted of students Roshen Amin, Marshall Overcash, Mitch Jeter, Caitlin Hattaway, Jessica Jensen, Taron Lilly, Nick Snipes, Will Fowler, Charlie Barr, Emily Cipolla, Ronni Lilly, Maggie Dees, Nikhil Roy, Jude Lockhart, Quinn Lockhart and Tom Bristol.
These students were given a list of 17 specific book titles to read. The team met with their coaches from September until competition to discuss the books and to quiz on the books.
Salisbury Academy’s team now advances to the regional competition.
