Post wins 23 N.C. Press Association awards

The Salisbury Post won 23 awards in the annual N.C. Press Association editorial and photojournalism contest, including first-place honors in a dozen categories and second place in general excellence.

Staff members received the awards at the Press Association’s annual winter institute in Chapel Hill tonight.

The Post won the most awards in its circulation category, competing with other daily newspapers across the state with circulations of 12,500 to 35,000. The contest period was Oct. 1, 2011, through Sept. 30, 2012.

• Staff writer Emily Ford won first place in news feature writing and second place in the video category.

• Former Post lifestyle editor Katie Scarvey won first place in profile writing, second in feature writing and lighter columns, and third in arts and entertainment reporting.

• Sarah Campbell, the Post’s former education reporter and now lifestyle editor, won first place in education reporting and first place in business writing.

• Photographer Jon Lakey won first-place awards in videos and sports photography and third in sports feature photos.

• Page designer and graphic artist Andy Mooney and Lakey won first place in photo illustration; Mooney also won second in photo illustration and third in graphics.

• Columnist Mark Wineka won first place in feature photography, first place in serious columns, and second place in business writing.

• Editor Elizabeth Cook won first place in lighter columns and first place in criticism.

• Sports Editor Ronnie Gallagher won first place in sports columns.

• Book page and Online Editor Deirdre Parker Smith won second place in criticism.

• Opinion Page Editor Chris Verner won third place in lighter columns.
