MOUNT ULLA — Arkansas defensive end Chris Smith was sitting in Scott Young’s office on Monday afternoon when talk of West’s Rowan’s alumni football game against Davie County was brought up.

“No,” Young chuckled before anyone could ask if Smith would particpate.

And he was quick to add that neither will Virginia’s K.P. Parks, Army’s Jon Crucitti, Catawba’s B.J. Sherrill or any of the other current college Falcon players.

“We will not jeopardize any college eligibility or injuries,” Young said.

Ah, but if you’re a Falcon or War Eagle graduate not playing college football, strap on the pads, boys. You can get back on the field for one more glorious night of football fame.

Think about Bryan Aycoth or Jared Barnette throwing passes again. Or Julian Samolu making hits.

Davie names like Cooter Arnold, formerly of UNC, or Raeshon McNeil once a Notre Dame defensive back, could be talked into playing.

The two schools have agreed to put on a full-contact alumni game. It will be held at West Rowan on May 11 at 6 p.m.

Organizers say they will provide the equipment.

“From what I understand, this started in the mountains of North Carolina and some of the rivalry games made thousands and thousands of dollars,” Young said. “It’s an idea that’s made it down here.”

Organizers say they raised $500,000 for high school football in 2012-13. Fans are turning out and Young can see why.

“Our fans and alumni will have fun with this, as well as Davie County,” he said. “We have the opportunity to be one of the first teams to play (an alumni game) around here.”

Only the first 40 to register will be guaranteed a spot on the team. Call 828-803-0120 or 828-707-7972.

Players can also register online at

There will be some famous names from the past bringing back the nostalgia, but the most famous faces may be in the bleachers.

Especially if Chris and K.P. come to watch.
