RCCC opens trail with Tour de Campus 5K
Rowan-Cabarrus Community College continued its 50th anniversary celebration with the Tour De Campus 5K Run/Walk on Saturday morning.
Most of the course was on the new RCCC fitness trail that was completed Friday afternoon. The 1.5-mile trail highlights the college’s ongoing wellness initiative and its anniversary celebration with the community.
Barb Meidl, Tour de Campus race director and resource development coordinator for the RCCC Alumni Foundation, said, “I am just so humbled that such a long list of people gave of themselves to help further this event. It was very exciting to see the community come out and take advantage of our new trail. We will look forward to seeing lots of these runners and walkers, as well as our own staff and students, making use of it.”
Brett Howell was the overall winner of the race with a time of 18 minutes and 19 seconds. He was followed by Anthony Nero in 20:30 and Chance Brown in 21:23.
Howell’s sister, Ashlinn Trexler, was the women’s winner with a time of 26 minutes and 10 seconds. She was followed by Dr. Acquawon Stallworth in 26:15. Third female was Jessica Swanson in 27:21.
“I will come out and do lots of my training here,” said Stallworth, one of Salisbury’s most avid runners. “The wooded part of the trail was spectacular and the race was a great workout. It was much different than a road course.”
Both male and female winning times were slower than usually seen on paved courses. The new RCCC fitness trail is all dirt and gravel, with lots of turns and few long straightaways. The course meanders through the woods that are part of the 100-acre campus.
Fun run winner was Jaxon Trexler in 3 minutes and 41 seconds.
Sponsors for the event included Vulcan Materials Co., Sheetz, Sweet Pickle Bakery and Delicatessen, Barnhardt Construction, Barnes and Noble, Canteen, the U.S. National Whitewater Center and Shelby Boone Law Firm.
