Freeze column: Time for running classes to start up again

Having just finished a tough 10 days battling a kidney stone, I am busting to get back out for regular exercise. The warm days are finally coming, spring is just around the corner and it’s a great time of year.

Each spring, we have several opportunities for beginning runner classes around the area. It just happens that this year we have four classes, all starting next week. Hopefully, there will be one that will suit those who are interested. Running is a great way to change your life!


There are two classes in Salisbury. The first one starts Tuesday at Rowan Regional Medical Center. The class is held in the meeting room next to the information desk in the lobby. Park in the deck and walk across to the lobby. Start time is 6 p.m., and average class time is about 75 minutes.

The second class in Salisbury is being held this year at the City Park building. It starts Thursday and continues Thursday evenings at 6 p.m. Parking is in the lot across from the City Park building.

Both classes are offered as a joint effort between the Salisbury Rowan Runners, Rowan Regional Medical Center and the Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department. Experienced runners will be on hand for advice and encouragement. Professionals from the area will teach the basics of running form, shoes and equipment, stretching, strengthening, safety, nutrition and injury prevention. Classes meet for eight weeks and runners will eventually complete a 5K (3.1 miles). Information is available at www.salisburyrowanrunners.org and 704-310-6741. Payment of $60 is required on the first night of class. Please arrive early. Each student gets a dri-fit training shirt.

Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is offering two classes of “Fortify Your Fitness” at the North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis. An evening class is offered on Mondays, starting this Monday, at 5:45 p.m. A noon class is offered on Thursdays. Both of these classes also run for eight weeks and cover basically the same curriculum as above. Prior registration is suggested for the RCCC classes and can be done at 704-216-7222. Online registration can be done by going to www.rccc.edu and clicking on the webAdvisor link. Then click “students” and “register” and pay for continuing education classes. Registration and payment can also be done at the first class meeting. Please arrive early. Cost for these classes is also $60 per eight-week session. Each student gets a dri-fit training shirt.

RCCC “Fortify Your Fitness” classes will be held in room 202 of the college’s building on the Research Campus. These classes will be taught by a certified running coach and personal trainer with 34 years of running experience. Other continuing education classes at RCCC are available also. The healthy living classes include Core Stability, Beginning Yoga, and Power Vinyasa Yoga. Retirement, Health Care and New Legislation, Cake Decorating, Sell it Online, Upcycling 101, and Introduction to Bonsai are offered also as personal enrichment classes.

Bottom line, go out and get active. We have lots of good fitness events coming up in the area. On tap within the next six weeks are quite a few events and locations available. This Saturday has the Rowan-Cabarrus Community College Tour de Campus 5K on the new trail at the Salisbury Campus. Sunday afternoon has the Shamrock Shuffle 5K at Knox Middle School. Next Saturday is the Millbridge Elementary 5K at the school.

April 6 has the Warrior’s Way 5K at the Salisbury Community Park. Carson High School hosts the Carson Prowl 5K on April 14, and West Rowan High School hosts the Run for Cowden 5K at Sloan Park on April 21. All of these events have half-mile fun runs for children, 12 and under. All of the events also encourage walkers to participate. Plenty of chances to get moving. Nothing feels better than exercise on a nice spring day.
