Spencer man charged with theft of trailer in Davie County
SALISBURY — A Spencer man was arrested Wednesday after authorities say he stole a trailer, a wood stove and a refrigerator from a storage building in Davie County.
While on routine patrol around 3 a.m. Wednesday, an officer with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of Enon Baptist Church on Ridge Road.
The truck was registered to Christopher Ray Payne, 33, of Spring Hill Avenue in Spencer. It was connected to a trailer that didn’t have a tag.
According to the sheriff’s office report, the officer approached Payne and asked if he needed help, Payne told him he had run out of gas and needed to get to the gas station. He said the trailer and its contents were his, and he was in the process of moving from a house on South Lee Street.
When another officer stopped by the address, the residents there said they didn’t know Payne, the report said.
Eventually, Payne said he had gotten the property from a storage building near the intersection of U.S. Highway 601 and N.C. Highway 801 in Davie County.
An officer from the Davie County Sheriff’s Office visited that address and confirmed that the property belonged to someone there.
Davie County charged Payne with felony larceny, and Rowan County charged him with possession of stolen property. He was placed in the Rowan County Detention Center under a $10,000 bond.
