RCCC’s new fitness trail nearly up for running
A dream nearly a year in the making on the Salisbury campus of Rowan-Cabarrus Community College is coming together this week just in time for an event to help mark the college’s first half-century.
The first Tour de Campus 5K will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday on the college’s new 1.5-mile fitness trail, which is to be completed today.
An RCCC Alumni Association task force of faculty and staff and an advisory committee of alumni agreed that having a fitness trail on campus would benefit the school.
The groups also wanted to have the first 5K during the college’s year-long 50th anniversary celebration. Not only will the race raise money, they hope it will promote a culture of wellness and provide an opportunity to connect with the community.
Barb Meidl, resource development coordinator for the school’s alumni foundation, said RCCC has formed an internal wellness committee charged with improving employee access to information and healthy activities.
And she called the trail “a perfect fit” with that effort.
“Having an established trail gives everyone a safe place to walk or jog during breaks or lunches, and it will certainly function as a great stress reliever,” she said. “Several instructors are already updating their curriculum to include nature walks with students. It can also be used for physical education courses and training.”
Dr. Carol Spalding, RCCC president, said the race is one way the college is thanking the community for its support over the school’s first 50 years.
“The community events that we are hosting this year — like the 5Ks — are for our students, faculty, staff and the community. Join in celebrating our history and your community college.”
Another 5K will be held on the RCCC South Campus on Sept. 21.
Saturday’s 5K will benefit the RCCC Alumni Association, which the college and its members hope to expand. Alumni who want to share their stories or get involved can contact Meidl at 704-216-3876 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Meidl also expressed thanks to Denise Hallett and Vulcan Materials, and Brandon Cornelius from Charles Cornelius Construction for their part in the construction of the fitness trail.
Registration continues through Saturday morning at 8:45 a.m. for the Tour de Campus 5K. The event will be headquartered in RCCC’s Building 400. A half-mile fun run for children 12 and younger starts at 9:45 a.m.
