SALISBURY — Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County will hold a Port-a-Pit barbecue chicken fundraiser Tuesday at the Salisbury Civic Center with proceeds used to help build Habitat houses for area families.

More than 5,000 meals will be available for sale for $8, which includes half a chicken, slaw, potato salad, dessert and a roll. Dinners will be served from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be plenty of seating available for anyone who would like to eat at the Civic Center. There will be drive-thru takeout services available. In 2012, Habitat for Humanity built seven new houses in Rowan County.

There are two houses going up now and two more will go up in April, said Executive Director Coleman Emerson.

“We provide mission opportunities for the community to come and participate in the work that we do,” Emerson said.

Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County is an ecumenical Christian ministry dedicated to the elimination of substandard housing. Habitat is founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, decent, affordable place to live in dignity and safety. Since it’s inception as an all-volunteer, grassroots organization in 1990, Habitat for Humanity of Rowan County has successfully completed the building of 97 homes in this community. More houses are currently under construction.

“Our community is indeed blessed by the efforts of Habitat volunteers for they help to make Rowan County a more caring and healthy place to live,” he said.

Habitat is also asking anyone who is able to donate cakes as well as anyone who can volunteer to operate the food line, serve tables, slice cakes, deliver large orders to contact the Habitat volunteer coordinator. The organization needs 200 volunteers to help. Donated cakes will be received at the Civic Center the day before the event, Monday and the day of the event.

To volunteer contact the volunteer coordinator, call 704-642-6292 ext. 101 or just show up the day of the event.
