A China Grove man is in critical condition today after wrecking his replica sports car on Thursday.

Mark Dale Pack, 49, was injured when he crashed on N.C. 152 at Kress Venture Road. A N.C. Highway Patrol trooper said Pack was driving 75 mph in a 55 mph zone when he lost control of the car and hit a tree.

Pack was driving a replica 427 Ford Shelby Cobra with no top. He was wearing a seat belt, but emergency responders told the trooper Pack’s head hit the tree.

Pack was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he remained today. A passenger didn’t appear to be seriously injured but was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast as a precaution, the trooper said.

Skid marks at the scene led from the roadway to the front lawn of a home on N.C. 152. The car came to rest in the yard of the home across from Kress Venture Road.

The skid marks disappeared after a short distance, indicating the vehicle may have been airborne before striking the tree.
