Meals on Wheels events include March 12 barbecue

SALISBURY — Meals on Wheels of Rowan will participate in the national 2013 March For Meals campaign.

Meals on Wheels events will include local pastors riding with volunteers and delivering meals during the month; March 12, Bar-B-Que Fundraiser catered by College Barbeque at First Presbyterian Church Salisbury, $8, call 704-633-0352 to buy tickets; March 20, Mayors and Big Wheels for Meals Day; March 28, South Rowan Y Service Club to deliver all seven South Rowan routes.

“In this tough economy, the food and human contact we provide to seniors in this community is needed more than ever,” said Rita Sims, executive director of Medals on Wheels of Rowan. “We need the community to come out and support our March For Meals events. Our clients are counting on us. We can’t let them down.”

March For Meals is a national campaign held during March, initiated and sponsored by the Meals On Wheels Association of America, to raise awareness of senior hunger and to encourage action on the part of local communities. Senior nutrition programs across the United States, like Meals on Wheels of Rowan, promote March For Meals through public events, partnerships with local businesses, volunteer recruitment and fundraising initiatives.

“Our Meals On Wheels programs are on the front lines every day in the battle against senior hunger,” said Meals On Wheels Association President and CEO Ellie Hollander. “March For Meals is a time when communities can come together to stand with their local Meals On Wheels program and support our mission to end senior hunger in America by the year 2020.”

The mission at Meals on Wheels of Rowan Inc. is “To provide a meal and friendly visit to the homebound of Rowan County.” Each weekday, the MOW volunteers deliver a hot lunchtime meal to clients.

This visit also serves as a safety check to insure that clients are well.

The Meals on Wheels program began in August 1976 by serving meals to 10 clients. MOW now averages a daily distribution of 200 meals without regard to race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, disability, age and/or ability to pay.
