Snow expected for mountains of North Carolina

RALEIGH (AP) — Up to a foot of snow could fall in the higher elevations of the North Carolina mountains.

The National Weather Service has posted winter storm warnings until 6 a.m. Thursday for the northwestern mountains. A winter weather advisory is in effect until midnight for other parts of the mountains.


Forecasters say up to 12 inches of snow could fall in the higher elevations of mountains. Forecasters say between 2 and 5 inches is expected around Boone.

Farther south, up to about 2 inches of snow is expected in the Asheville area.

Light snow was reported early Wednesday in Asheville, Jefferson and farther west in Franklin.
