Come one, come all to the event of the year! Children, parents and staff dressed as their favorite story book character on Feb. 7 and walked into Millbridge Elementary School like a star on a red carpet.
Photo opportunities were all over the building, awaiting young characters for a snazzy capture. Upon arrival parents received schedules to follow, as they had pre-registered for sessions. Sessions were presented by each grade level and highlighted a specific element of literacy.
Kindergarten focused on beginning reading; first grade shared the importance of phonemic awareness; second grade emphasized comprehension; third grade showcased the Daily 5 Literacy Program; fourth grade discussed writing across the curriculum; and fifth grade shared the impact of fluency through readers’ theater.
The school’s administrators welcomed guests in their costumes. Christopher Smith posed as the Mad-Hatter, and Dr. Angela Lingle-Linder was Dr. Seuss’ Cat in the Hat. Approximately 215 parents and children attended the event and each family heard three literacy sessions and enjoyed supper. Staff members created a literature-rich environment by dressing as book characters, and some grade levels even were themed like the fifth grade “Herdmans” from “The Best Christmas Pagent Ever” and “The Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf” from the second grade teachers. The event was a success and everyone is looking forward to it again next year.
