Belmont Abbey freshman Samantha Jacobs (North Rowan) pitched a one-hitter against Lees-McRae on Saturday but lost 1-0. Jacobs struck out six and walked one.

Jacobs is 2-3 with a 2.90 ERA. She has 43 strikeouts in 41 innings.

Freshman Kaitlyn Jones (South Rowan) has started 10 games for the Crusaders.

• Campbell’s Ericka Nesbitt (East Rowan) was phenomenal in a tournament in Hawaii.

She was 11-for-15 in her first four games on the Islands. Nesbitt was 4-for-4 with four runs scored in an 8-5 loss to Hawaii.

College tournaments

Pairings are in today’s Scoreboard for the SAC and Conference Carolinas tournaments.

Catawba’s third-seeded women are home on Wednesday against Tusculum at 7. Catawba’s seventh-seeded men will travel to Anderson for an 8 p.m. tipoff.

In Conference Carolinas, Pfeiffer’s women are at home against Queens at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Pfeiffer’s men didn’t qualify for the tourney.

College baseball

Preston Troutman (East Rowan) and Noah Holmes (East) combined for five hits as Appalachian State beat Davidson 10-4 on Sunday.

College tennis

Catawba’s tennis teams beat Quincy by 8-1 scores on Sunday in Hilton Head.

Prep softball

Emma Pope hit a grand slam on her 18th birthday to lead South Rowan to a 7-6 win against Mooresville.

Pope’s homer gave South a 5-1 lead, and the Raiders were able to hold on. Pope and Beth Ann Martin made great catches in the outfield.

Both teams had nine hits. Snow and snow mixed with rain fell early in the game.

Samantha Kennerly had two hits, drove in a run and pitched five innings for the win. Caitlin Waters had a two-run homer and a triple.

Logan Lowery got the save for the Raiders (2-0).

South is scheduled to play West Iredell in an NPC game on Tuesday.

Knox Shamrock Shuffle

Knox Middle School will host its 1st annual Shamrock Shuffle 5k Run/Walk on Sunday, March 17 at 2:30 p.m. at the school. There also will be a half-mile fun run at 3:15.

Michael Childress shot 79 in the first round of a National Junior Golf Tournament at Sapona Ridge in Lexington.

•The McCanless Couples played a two-man Captain’s Choice format Sunday.

Bryan Reynolds and David Huneycutt finished first. Coming in second was the team of Don Goodnight, Gene Seaford and MarySeaford.

Longest putt was won by Tommy Reynolds.

Prep baseball

East Davidson beat Trinity 7-1 behind strong pitching by Ryan McIntyre.

McIntyre, Trevor Jones, Avery Bowles and Josh Craven had two hits each for the Golden Eagles.

Jayvee baseball

The Greater Cabarrus Homeschool Stallions defeated the Charlotte Stampede 12-0.

McConner Wallace had three hits while, Travis Cone, Daniel Durham and Dalton Lankford had two apiece.
