Teachers attend NCCAT

Several area educators recently attended seminars at the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching.

Participating educators from Rowan-Salisbury Schools included Trina L. Chester of Hurley Elementary School; Robert M. Marchinko of Knollwood Elementary School; Sandra C. Mitchem of Landis Elementary School; John W. Brady Jr. and Leia M. DeWald of North Rowan Elementary School; and Tammy F. Daugherty of Woodleaf Elementary School.

A participating educator from Kannapolis City Schools was Talitha A. Lowman of Kannapolis Intermediate School.

NCCAT educates teachers and provides them with new knowledge, skills, teaching methods, best practices and information to take back to their classrooms. Title I taking applications

The Rowan-Salisbury School System’s Title I program is accepting applications for children to enroll in pre-kindergarten programs at North Rowan and Hanford Dole elementary schools.

The programs are scheduled to start in August. Transportation will not be provided, however, students who live in the Hanford Dole and North Rowan attendance areas will be permitted to ride the regular school bus.

To be eligible, a child must be 4 years of age on or before Aug. 31, 2013; demonstrate an educational need; have a completed application returned by March 8.

Applications may be picked up in the school office Monday through Friday, during school hours or at the Title I Parent Resource Center, 314 N. Ellis St., Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Student transfer requests

The student transfer window for the 2013/2014 school year opens Friday, March 1, and closes Tuesday, April 30.

All student transfer requests made for a valid educational purpose must be received during the posted time frame. Once the window closes on April 30, there will be no other opportunities to make requests.

North Hills open house

North Hills Christian School invites the community to attend the school’s open house coffee scheduled for March 12 at 8:45 a.m. Guests may tour the campus, observe classes, meet faculty and staff members, and learn more about the school and its programs, including the school’s gradual shift toward classical Christian schooling. In addition, guests and their children may shadow a current student during the March 12 Shadow Day to experience a typical day at North Hills.

Hudson visits Cannon School

CONCORD – Congressman Richard Hudson visited Cannon School on Feb. 19 thanks to Cannon senior Andrew Herrin of Mt. Pleasant who invited Hudson to speak to his AP government class as part of his senior Capstone Project. The Capstone Project, which is completed by all Cannon seniors, must be personally meaningful to the student, and the project must contribute in an authentic way to the well-being of at least one other person.

The goal of Herrin’s project is to promote enthusiasm and awareness about the United States’ electoral and political processes. Herrin recently volunteered for the Concord Republican Victory Center during the general election and spread awareness by canvassing, registering voters and polling. Herrin explains, “I contacted Congressman Hudson in order to promote enthusiasm for our system of government to my AP government class. Congressman Hudson is my representative, and it was beyond exciting that he visited Cannon, and I am thankful to have had him speak to our class. One day I hope to be in a position to change our country for the better, and I look up to Congressman Hudson for what he has, and will accomplish.”

Hudson talked about his freshman experience as congressman for the N.C. 8th District, the casework he performs for his constituents, and his service on the Agriculture, Homeland Security and Education and Workforce committees in Washington, D.C. A question and answer session included the chance for students to discuss a range of current political topics, ranging from the sequester to technology and trends related to airport security.

Hudson said, “Life is about relationships, and politics is a lot about relationships, too. You have to know what’s important to people to convince them to help you. I encourage you to try to build relationships with people you don’t know, and continue to focus on your relationships with your classmates, teachers and families.”
