On Feb. 1 at Granite Quarry Elementary, you would have been able to see wizards, princesses, Fancy Nancy and the Cat in the Hat roaming the halls. Students and staff celebrated reading by dressing as their favorite book characters.

A parade allowed the whole school and parents to see these creative characters. Each participant carried his or her featured book as they passed by a panel of judges. Granite Quarry was honored to have as their judges Board of Education member Josh Wagner, Rowan-Salisbury Schools Media/AIG Director Kelly Feimster and fellow teacher Amy Dalton.

Student and staff winners received prizes for best character representation. Student winners included: first place, Dylan Goodnight; second place, Tristan Tidwell; third place, Rebecca Porter. Staff winners included Angela Galloway, Debbie Eury, Victoria McLain and Sandy Powell. Smiles and laughter were easily found as Barack Obama, Captain Underpants, the Statue of Liberty and Pinocchio strolled through the halls. The love of books and reading is alive and well at Granite Quarry Elementary.
