CONCORD — A former Rockwell man will spend 40 days in jail and 36 months on probation for driving his truck into a group of cyclists and fleeing the scene in 2010.

Daniel Burton Wilson II, 23, was convicted by a jury Monday of five counts of felony hit and run and one count of misdemeanor hit and run after a week-long trial in Cabarrus County Superior Court.

This morning, a judge told Wilson he would spend seven consecutive days in jail, then serve the remaining 33 days broken up at other times, such as weekends.

If he violates his probation, Wilson faces up to eight months in prison.

Wilson, who now lives in Lincolnton, was also ordered to perform 100 hours of community service and will lose his driver’s license for one year.

The incident in which Wilson was charged happened in May 2010 in northeastern Cabarrus County near the Rowan County line.

A group of 18 cyclists were traveling single-file down St. Stephen’s Church Road when Wilson’s Nissan Pathfinder swerved into them, seriously injuring several.

Wilson then drove away.

Some of the cyclists recorded the vehicle’s license plate number. Wilson later turned himself in at the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office.
