City to hold press conference about 300 block of South Main Street

SALISBURY — The city will hold a press conference Monday regarding development in the 300 block of South Main Street, the same area where Salisbury and Rowan-Salisbury Schools want to build the school central office.

City Council has met in closed session several times in the recent past to discuss economic development and will meet again at 10 a.m. Monday in City Hall, 217 S. Main St., in conjunction with the press conference.

The city has been courting several businesses and private developers reportedly interested in the south end of downtown.

In the 300 block of South Main Street, the city owns the old GX Fitness building and an adjacent office building that would connect to the future central office, as well as a parking lot that hosts the Salisbury Rowan Farmers Market. The market is expected to move to make way for central office parking, which the city is donating to the school system.

City Council voted unanimously last week to consider borrowing $8 million on behalf of the school system to build a 62,000-square-foot central office at the corner of South Main and East Bank streets after Rowan County commissioners killed the project, citing massive contamination at the site.

The city is cleaning up contaminated soil from an old service station, and the state is picking up most of the tab.
