KANNAPOLIS — Authorities say the man rescued from a burning mobile home Sunday night had just assaulted his mother with a baseball bat.

Kannapolis firefighters pulled Klint Lanning, 35, from the blaze at 4600 Nob Hill Drive. He remained at Carolinas Medical Center at NorthEast Tuesday.

Police said Lanning and his mother lived in the Nob Hill Drive mobile home.

Kannapolis Police Capt. Kenneth Jackson said Lanning’s mother fled from the home to a neighbor’s house where she called police for help. A 911 call was initially dispatched in reference to an assault about 8:45 p.m.

“He assaulted her with a baseball bat,” Jackson said. Officers went to the Nob Hill Drive home “to follow up on the investigation. That’s when they found the residence on fire.”

Authorities have not filed charges against Lanning, Jackson said.

Kannapolis Police and Kannapolis Fire are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Jackson said Lanning is still being treated, but the 35-year-old’s condition was not immediately available.
