CLEVELAND — Cedar Grove AME Zion Church and the Cleveland Lions Club are sponsoring an American Red Cross Blood Drive from 3 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the IGA Parking Lot. Check-in is in the 24-7 Total Fitness center. The shopping center is at 11741 Statesville Blvd.

The blood drive is in memory of the Rev. Donnie Kent, former pastor of Third Creek AME Zion Church.

“It is with great honor, accompanied by wonderful memories of Rev. Donnie Kent, that I urge all citizens of Cleveland who can do so to give blood” at the event, Cleveland Mayor Dr. John Steele said in news release.

“Reverend Kent’s service of 16 years to Cleveland and western Rowan, as minister and citizen, was characterized by a spirit of love and caring for all people, regardless of ethnicity, of our community,” Steele said.

“It is most fitting that this blood drive be dedicated to the memory of one who will always be considered to be one of Cleveland’s most outstanding civic and religious leaders.”

Examples of Kent’s leadership in and support of the community include the church’s hosting the West Rowan Lunch Club for senior citizens and the annual Community Day, open to the whole community.
