The Rowan Regional Medical Center Winter Flight 8K, the fourth-oldest road race in North Carolina, will be held at Catawba College on Saturday, Jan. 26.

There will also be a 5K health walk and half-mile fun run. The event kicks off with early packet pickup and late registration on Friday night, Jan. 25, from 5-7:30 p.m. Early packet pickup is in the lobby of Goodman Gym.

Again this year, Winter Flight is the N.C. Road Runners Club of America 8K state championship. State winners, both male and female, will be crowned as overall top winners, top masters (age 40 and over), top grand masters (age 50 and over), and top senior grand masters (age 60 and over). The race is also on the prestigious Running Journal Grand Prix, a year-long points circuit of some of the top races in the Southeast.

Walkers are encouraged to participate in the 3.1 mile health walk. Children 12 and under have the fun run on the Shuford Stadium track. The 8K (4.97 miles) course uses a loop course that includes Yost Street, Statesville Boulevard, Milford Drive, Jake Alexander Extension, U.S. 601 and the Catawba campus and track.

Start time for the 8K and 5K Health Walk is 10 a.m. The fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. Awards are scheduled to be presented in Goodman Gym at 11:15 a.m.

All proceeds for the event go to Rowan Helping Ministries. Sponsors include Rowan Regional Medical Center, Catawba College, the City of Salisbury, the Forum, Fowler Physical Therapy, Walgreen’s, Cheerwine, The Civitan Club of Salisbury, Marathon Business Center, Vac and Dash and the Salisbury Post. The event is presented by the Salisbury Rowan Runners.

Meredith Abramson of Whimziggy has designed the commemorative logo for the 30th annual event. All 8K and 5K participants will get that logo on a long-sleeved shirt. Refreshments will also be available for all participants.

A health and wellness expo will include Phidippides Sports Center of Concord, Rowan Regional’s Balance Assessment and Musculoskeletal Screening, Chiropractor Daniel Zagst and more.
