Flu vaccinations are still available in Rowan and Cabarrus counties.

The Rowan County Health Department, 1811 E. Innes St., gives vaccinations to walk-ins and by appointment. To make an appointment, call 704-216-8786. If no one answers, leave a message and your call will be returned.

The Cabarrus Health Alliance, 300 Mooresville Road in Kannapolis, takes calls for appointments at 704-920-1205.

In a news release, the Cabarrus Health Alliance said it has ďa limited amountĒ of vaccine available.

Sharon Owen, nursing director for the Rowan Health Department, said the agency has vaccine available for the general public as well as some set aside for prenatal women and small children.

She said the state also has more vaccine available for local health departments.

Owen said the vaccine takes about two weeks to provide full protection. This yearís vaccine contains the three most predominant strains of influenza and can also lessen the severity of symptoms from variant strains, she said.

Though flu seasons typically peak in January or February, surveillance sites across North Carolina have reported a decrease in the number of diagnosed flu cases over the last couple of weeks, Owens said.

Dr. Russell Suda, medical director for the Health Alliance, said a vaccination is the best protection against the flu, and itís not too late to get vaccinated.

Many pharmacies also provide vaccinations and accept health insurance.
