Salisbury High PTSA creates scholarship to honor longtime principal Dr. Windsor Eagle

The Parent-Teacher-Student Association at Salisbury High School has plans to honor longtime principal Dr. Windsor Eagle with a unique scholarship.

Krista Woolly, co-vice president of the association, said that when Eagle announced his retirement last year, after 32 years at the school, the group knew right away they wanted to do something.

“The athletic boosters named the athletic complex after Dr. Eagle because he was very involved with athletics, but he was extremely involved with all the other aspects of the school as well, the academic piece was so important,” she said. “He really made that school what it is.”

The association decided a $1,000 scholarship would be the appropriate way to honor the veteran principal, who served the school from 1980 to 2012.

“We wanted something that would carry on forever and ever,” Woolly said.

What makes the scholarship unique is the fact that Eagle came up with the requirements.

Students must be in the top 20 percent of their graduating class, earn three varsity letters, receive no out-of-school suspensions, attend class on a regular basis, serve in a leadership role and show compassion through volunteerism to receive the N. Windsor Eagle Scholarship.

“This is really looking for a well-rounded student,’ he said. “I’m appreciative of the recognition and the honor the PTSA has bestowed on me with this scholarship.

“I didn’t expect it, I didn’t solicit it, but I am pleased to have such recognition.”

Jennifer Flynn, co-vice president of the association, said the scholarship is now one of five given by the group annually. The long-standing tradition, which spans more than 30 years, includes two merit-based and two need-based scholarships totaling $3,100.

“It’s sort of impressive that it’s been going on that long,” Woolly said.

Woolly said educational leaders from throughout the community conduct interviews for all but one of the scholarships. All applicants must be members of the PTSA.

Recipients will be named during the honor awards assembly hosted by the PTSA this spring.
