An actor who starred in the award-winning film “Fireproof” will be a guest lecturer Wednesday at Livingstone College.
Ken Bevel, who starred with actor Kirk Cameron in the 2008 hit movie “Fireproof,” will deliver the keynote address at 11 a.m. in Varick Auditorium. Cameron is famous for playing Mike Seaver on ABC’s hit sitcom “Growing Pains.” In “Fireproof,” Bevel  portrays Lt. Michael Simmons and is a close friend and mentor to Cameron.
Bevel, who also starred in “Courageous,” which premiered in 2011, is from Jacksonville, Fla. He has a bachelor’s degree in computer engineering technology from the University of Memphis and an MBA in logistics management from the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif.
After 20 years of active service in the U.S. Marine Corps, Bevel retired a captain to serve in the ministry. He is a senior associate pastor of Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Ga., and is expected to deliver a motivational message to Livingstone’s students, faculty and staff on Wednesday.
“I have known Capt. Bevel since we were young men, and we also served in the Marines together,” said Dr. Herman J. Felton, Jr., senior vice president of Livingstone College. “We often have dynamic speakers at the college, but trust me when I say Ken Bevel will be one of the most powerful speakers to ever grace Varick Auditorium and address our student body.
“I’m really excited about hearing his message on Wednesday because I know it’s going to be potent and just what our students need to hear,” Felton continued. “The spring semester began just last week at Livingstone, and I can’t think of a better person to have as our first lecturer of 2013 than Capt. Bevel. I know our students, faculty and staff will be blessed by his message, and I encourage any Livingstone alumni in the area who can stop by on Wednesday morning to do so.”
As senior associate pastor at Sherwood Baptist Church, Bevel’s responsibilities include coordinating major events, coordinating the security, usher and greeter ministries and assisting new members and visitors with connecting to the body of Christ and the Sherwood family.
Bevel and his wife, Lauana, have two children, Kyra and Kaleb.
