Robbery suspect shoots himself in leg

KANNAPOLIS — One suspect shot himself in the leg while another was captured following a robbery at Jordan’s Hot Spot, 2500 S. Main St., Kannapolis.
At about 4 a.m. today, Kannapolis Police learned of a robbery that had just happened at Jordan’s Hot Spot. Shortly after that, a Concord Police officer saw a suspicious vehicle containing two men who matched the description of the robbery suspects.
When the Concord officer tried to stop the vehicle at Marietta Place, both men jumped from it and ran away. As one suspect, later identified as Johnny L. Steele of 2406 Runningbrook Drive, Kannapolis, ran into the woods, a gunshot was fired. Steele had shot himself in his left leg. He was taken into custody and treated at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast. No shots were fired by police.
The second suspect, Michael A. Smith, of 1227 Pless St. N.W., Concord, was found a short time later and taken into custody.
Smith was charged with robbery. Steele will be charged once he is released from the hospital.
