NC fisherman gets tangled in net and killed
OAK ISLAND (AP) — Authorities say a 34-year-old commercial fisherman has died after his clothing got caught in a fishing reel and he was slammed to the ground.
Wildlife officers said Jeremy Myers’ uncle found the body Saturday on a boat off Oak Island after he tried to call his nephew’s cellphone and didn’t get an answer.
Investigators say Myers’ body was wrapped in the netting, with his head pinned against the box where fish are stored.
Black bears head east into Cleveland County
SHELBY (AP) — Authorities say the number of black bear sightings is rising in Cleveland County.
The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission told The Star of Shelby that officers now get about 10 bear sightings a year. Wildlife officers say bears are working their way east from where they are more commonly seen in the North Carolina mountains.
Authorities now allow bear hunting in season across all of Cleveland County. Before, hunting was only allowed in the western half.
