SPENCER Want to know more about plans for Spencer Woods?

The LandTrust for Central North Carolina and the town of Spencer will present the draft master plan for the 42-acre forest near downtown Spencer during a public hearing at 6 p.m. Thursday in Town Hall.

Spencer Woods, also known as the Fred Stanback Educational Forest & Preserve, is the forest bound by Rowan Avenue, Salisbury Avenue and 17th Street in Spencer. The LandTrust has been working with the Spencer community for the last year on plans to develop the property into a passive nature preserve.

The master plan was developed based on community feedback by Site Solutions, a landscape architecture and site planning firm, and approved by the Spencer Board of Alderman at their December meeting. The purpose of this presentation is to discuss implementation of the plan for improving public access and applying for grant funding from the North Carolina Parks & Recreation Trust Fund.

The town is buying the woods from the LandTrust, using a $200,000 state grant.
