Moir Christmas Classic: Davie girls 67, North Rowan 46
SALISBURY — Has Amy Steller ever had a bad game in Catawba’s Goodman Gym?
Fans of the Moir Christmas Classic can’t remember one. The senior guard gave them another superb performance on Thursday in a 67-46 opening win against fourth seed North Rowan.
Steller, a 1,000-point scorer headed to Pfeiffer, sank 4-of-6 3-pointers and dished out four assists. She helped Davie stun Brian Lytton’s Cavaliers early. The fifth seed led 18-2 after one quarter and Steller’s third three made it 27-5 midway through the second.
“Amy played really well today,” Davie’s veteran coach Denny Key said. “She made a lot of good decisions. Everybody feeds off her.”
Key was especially pleased with the passing. Of Davie’s 26 baskets, 17 were on assists.
“We were getting the ball to the open player or the player who had the best shot,” he said. “We haven’t always done that.”
Special Washington got North going with two straight treys but it was far too late. Davie dominated in the lane, outrebounding the Cavaliers 45-33. North shot only 28 percent from the field.
“We never played our game,” Lytton said. “We never played up-tempo. We don’t rebound well so when they’re getting two and three shots and we get one, it’s hard to win.”
Ashiah Peterson, an active 5-10 sophomore, kept Davie’s lead increasing in the third quarter. She scored six of her 12 points and finished with 10 rebounds.
When Steller hit her fourth 3, Davie had its largest lead a 41-17.
“We’re very young, we just have to learn from it,” Lytton shrugged. “We have to play through the droughts and pick it up on defense.”
