Banned Books Week Read-Out: Celebrate your freedom to read. Read passages from your favorite banned book such as “Gone With the Wind,” “The Lord of the Rings” or “The Hunger Games.” Come dressed as your favorite character from a banned book. Young at Heart Book Group: Are you an adult who has discovered books written for a teen audience? Many of today’s most popular titles are written for teens, and many adults have discovered new authors to love. This month’s book is “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs. Jacob’s grandfather has always told him stories about his childhood friends that could do peculiar things. But Jacob always thought they were just stories – until he visits a mysterious island. Oct. 30 at 5:30 p.m.
Fuller receives fellowship
Dr. Janice Moore Fuller, Catawba College’s writer-in-residence and professor of English, has been awarded a two-week fellowship in December by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA). The VCCA is near Sweet Briar College in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in rural Virginia. Fuller will be among approximately 25 fellows focusing on their own creative projects at this working retreat for visual artists, writers and composers.
The VCCA serves more than 350 international artists a year. VCCA fellows have received major awards and accolades, including MacArthur grants, Pulitzer Prizes, Guggenheim fellowships, National Endowment for the Arts awards, Rome Prizes, Pollock-Krasner grants, National Book Awards, Broadway and Off-Broadway productions and Academy Award nominations.
New book club
Literary Bookpost’s co-ed book club, LBP’s Reading Between the Wines, kicks off Friday, Oct. 5 at 6 p.m. It will meet at the store, 110 S. Main St. The first book chosen is “The Book Lover,” by Maryann McFadden. McFadden will attend. She will start her presentation at 6, but readers can come early and enjoy some wine.
