Woman charged in jewelry theft
The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office charged a woman Tuesday with felony larceny, a charge that follows an investigation into jewelry theft that began Jan. 25.
Kayelyn Penny Long, 50, of 375 Ted Lane, also received a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses. She was placed in the Rowan County jail under a $5,000 secured bond.
Authorities said the investigation began when Joyce Hartman of 170 Ted Lane noticed a diamond necklace and two gold bracelets were missing. Hartman reported she had placed the jewelry, which needed repairing, on her kitchen table.
After searching her home for the jewelry, Hartman told authorities she remembered Long came over in mid-January to use her phone and the jewelry was out on the table when she was there, the report said.
Detectives investigated and found the necklace had been taken to This -n-That Trading Post in Rockwell, and found a payment receipt filled out to a Penny Long in the amount of $272.
The report did not indicate whether the bracelets had been recovered.
