Rowan Arts Council awards grants to local groups

The Rowan Arts Council Board of Directors, with recommendations from a community panel, has awarded Grassroots grants to 11 Rowan County organizations.

To be eligible, sub-grantees must adhere to strict guidelines from the N.C. Arts Council.

Organizations receiving grants are: Carolina Artists, $800 for the Student Art Expo and Student Art Exchange; The Concert Choir, $500 to present "A Study in Language" concert; Knox Middle School Band, $2,000 to present a band camp;

Piedmont Players, $4,000 for the youth theatre program; Rowan Blues and Jazz, $4,000 to present the Blues and Jazz Festival and youth music education; Rowan County Concert Association, $1,000 to present David Holt and the Lightning Bolts concert;

Rowan Parks and Recreation Therapeutic Division, $3,000 for art programs for people with disabilities and for the Silver Arts Exhibit; Salisbury Rowan Choral Society, $1,000 to present "Let Music Live" concert; Salisbury-Rowan Symphony Society, $3,000 to present the "Family Concert;"

St. John's Lutheran Church Barnabas Connection, $1,750 for an art program for at-risk youth; Waterworks Visual Arts Center, $2,000 for the Summer Artist Residency program.

The Grassroots grant program is made possible by the North Carolina Arts Council with funding from the state of North Carolina and the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes that a great nation deserves great art.

The purpose of the program is to provide funding for the arts throughout the state of North Carolina. The Rowan Arts Council is the designated county partner for the grassroots program.Grant applications for fiscal year 2009/2010 will be available at the Rowan Arts Council in the summer of 2009.
