In this photograph from 1951, First Lt. John E. Gray, left, receives the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action from Maj. Gen. Harry J. Collins in a ceremony at Fort Jackson, S.C. The honor was for Gray’s actions in North Korea on Dec. 1, 1950, the same day his commander, Col. Don Faith, was mortally wounded.
Army Lt. Col. Don C. Faith Jr. was seriously injured by shrapnel on Dec. 1, 1950, in Korea and died a day later from those injuries.
