CHINA GROVE — The eighth-ranked West Rowan girls soccer team improved to 7-0 for the first time with a hard fought, come from behind 3-2 victory over Carson.

Sarah Safrit put the Cougars ahead 1-0 as she tucked in a pass that eluded all of the Falcon defenders and found her at the back post.

About 10 minutes later, the Cougars were up 2-0 when Hannah Elmore blasted a 30 yard free kick past the out stretched arms of Falcon goal keeper Joana Samano.

Late in the first half West (7-0, 3-0) scored as Rebecca Parker jumped on a loose ball in a scramble in front of the Cougars goal to make it 2-1.

When the teams switched sides in the second half, the Falcons seemed to bring a renewed spirit with them as they pressured the Cougars back line looking for the equalizer.

Midway through the second half Parker was as it again as she fired home her second of the night to pull the Falcons even.

Mariah Coleman, who has been affected by the stomach bug and only played about 15 minutes, re-entered the game late in the second half and had an immediate impact as she scored the game-winner with about seven minutes to go with a shot into the side netting past Carson Goalkeeper Alex Allen.

The game went back and forth as the Cougars’ midfield of Cassie Howard and Hannah Elmore were in a dogfight with the Parker, Toni Lucente and Madison Muire.

The Falcons’ back line of Kayla Boley, Meredith Stanley, Claudia Patterson and Meagan Osian did a great job in the second half of slowing down Carson’s dangerous wingers Katie Barringer and Safrit.

“I’ll take that win,” said West coach Nick Brown. “Anytime you can come away with a conference win on the road against a good team you have to be happy about it. My hat goes off to Carson as the battled us for 80 minutes. They have some hard working kids over there and their coaches are doing a great job. I’m also extremely proud of my team for not giving up even though we were down goals. I’ve got some great leaders on this team who really pulled us though it tonight”

The Cougars move to 2-3 (1-2 NPC).
