Area briefs: Catawba women at Goodman Gym

Catawba's women's basketball team shoots for its fourth win tonight at 8 p.m. against Virginia Union at Goodman Gym.

Catawba is 3-1, while Virginia Union brings a 2-1 mark to Salisbury.

Catawba has been a fast-paced, high-scoring squad and has tallied at least 80 points in every outing.

Veterans Brittany Higgins and Nisha Long and freshmen Pamela Muldrow and Maggie Sullivan have led the charge.

Tonaye Smith led Virginia Union in its most recent outing.

The Catawba-VU game is the nightcap of the first round of the Catawba Comfort Suites Classic and follows a contest between Lenoir-Rhyne (2-1) and J.C. Smith (2-2) at 6 p.m.

Two more tournament games will be played Saturday afternoon. Lenoir-Rhyne faces Virginia Union at 2 p.m while Catawba meets J. C. Smith at 4 p.m.

* Catawba's unbeaten men play Bowie State and Northern Kentucky in a tournament at Wingate this weekend.

* Livingstone's men play in the Lakeshore Classic at 4 p.m. today in Gary, Ind.

The Blue Bears face Lincoln today and will play Fisk or Wilberforce Saturday afternoon.

- Prep wrestling

Carson downed Central Cabarrus 66-12.

Winners for the Cougars included Zach White (13-6), Terry Smith, Jacorian Brown, Micah Honeycutt (8-0), Zach Furr, Spencer Chapman, Ryan Craft (14-5), Nick Golden, Tom Keodoupha, Anson Phillips (11-2) and Tyler Starnes (15-7).

Honeycutt, 215, placed second in a recent tournament at Ardrey Kell, and Nick Golden was third at Ardrey Kell at 119.

* South Rowan defeated North Davidson 44-28.

Jacob Freeman, Zane Harmon, Eli Freeman, Skylar Stamey, Zack Howell and C.J. McCluney registered pins for South.

Thomas Lowe won by technical fall at 189, and Seth Moore won a decision at 145.

Tennessee senior offensive lineman Ben Weisensel (East Rowan) will dress against Kentucky on Saturday.

- East tennis

Catawba tennis coach Jeff Childress announced East Rowan's Emilee Smith has signed with the Indians' tennis program.

- Wonder tickets

Tickets for A.L. Brown's third-round playoff football game at Charlotte Catholic are on sale at coach Ron Massey's office in Bullock Gym today from 12:30 until 2 p.m.

The presale cost is $6. Tickets are $7 at the gate.

Gates will open at 6 p.m.

- College women's hoops

South Carolina State's Sophilia Hipps (North Rowan) broke out of an early-season slump with five 3-pointers and 22 points in an 81-74 loss against Gardner-Webb on Tuesday.

Hipps also had five rebounds.

* Tracey Croner (East Rowan) scored 13 points for Guilford in a 69-60 loss against Roanoke on Tuesday.

* Brittany Cornelius (East) scored eight points and had six rebounds for Meredith in a 66-56 loss against Salem on Tuesday.

* Renee Roberson (West Rowan) scored 12 points for Lees-McRae in a 78-76 loss against Queens on Tuesday.

* Nicole Maready (Davie) has averaged 13.0 points and 7.8 rebounds in Pfeiffer's first four games.

* Newberry's Monica Alexander has been named SAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Alexander, a senior guard from Atlanta, averaged 20.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game and shot 57.1 percent from the field on the week.

- College men's hoops

Towson's Junior Hairston (West Rowan) made his season debut Monday in a 61-48 victory against New Jersey Institute of Technology.

Hairston, who was suspended for Towson's first three contests, came off the bench and scored 13 points in 20 minutes.

Hairston scored seven straight Towson points to give the Tigers a 41-29 lead with 12:30 left in the game.

* Coker's Michael Gore (South Rowan) scored seven points in an 81-74 loss against Limestone on Monday.

* Jamel Carpenter (West) averaged 11.5 points per game in his first six outings for Florida Community College in Jacksonville.

* Tusculum's Kyle Moore was named SAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week.

Moore, a 6-3 junior from Gainesville, Fla., averaged 30.5 points per game to lead the Pioneers (2-1) to a pair of wins.
