From staff reportsUSC Aiken junior Byron Faison sank a 3-pointer as time expired to lift the visiting Pacers to a 92-90 win over Catawba in the opening game of the Salisbury Roundball Classic on Friday night at Goodman Gym.
The Pacers win their opener, while the Catawba falls to 2-1.
Faison's shot came after a scramble off an offensive rebound by Sterling Council that was knocked loose in the lane. The ball bounced out to Faison at the top of the key and his shot hit the front rim and bounced through for the winning basket.
Catawba's Dominick Reid had missed a pair of free throws with 14 seconds to play with the Indians holding a 90-89 edge.
Catawba had rallied from a 10-point deficit early in the second half. Donzell Williams had two steals and layups to ignite a 15-3 run that put Catawba on top 67-65 with 10:07 remaining. Rob Fields tied the game on a three-pointer and Donald Rutherford put the Indians on top with a pair of free throws.
Catawba placed all five starters in double figures, led by Rutherford with 17 points, six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Reid and Antonio Houston each had 15 points, while Fields added 14. Williams tallied 11 points and had three steals.n Sacred Heart hoops
Sacred Heart's varsity boys defeated St. John's of Winston-Salem 52-35.
Eric Edwards tossed in a career-high 26 points for the Dolphins (6-1) and added eight rebounds, five assists and six steals. Banks Fisher had 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Bobby Cardelle, Chili Chilton and Yonathan Sorto paced the defense.
- Sacred Heart's varsity beat St. Johnn's 43-7 for their first win of the season. Sacred Heart was Erin Ansbro with 25 points.
Anna Tonseth had 13 points and Ansbro with 12 in a 33-31 loss to Community School of Davidson.
n In the jayvee boys game, Sacred Heart fell 22-18 despite 10 points by Joseph Harrison.
n Sacred Heart hosts the Rowan-Cabarrus Home School Stallions on Monday at the Boyd Dolphin Tank.
n The annual Jack Campbell Memorial Hoops Classic featuring the Blue-Gold Game and the Alumni Game, is set for Saturday, Nov. 28, at Sacred Heart.
Proceeds go to the Jack Campbell Scholarship Fund.
The Campbell Scholarship is awarded each year to a Salisbury High senior.
