Area sports briefs: Catawba women play

Catawba's women's basketball team opens its home schedule tonight. The Indians (2-0) square off with Barton at 7 p.m.

Catawba opened with victories over King and Converse.

Brittany Higgins scored 40 points in the two games.

Catawba also plays host to Pfeiffer on Saturday at 7 p.m.

- Poole signs with Brevard

East Rowan senior guard Katelynne Poole has signed with Brevard.

Poole averaged 11.5 points for the Mustangs as a junior and has scored 641 career points.

- Catawba men

Catawba's men's basketball team travels to Charlotte to play Queens at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Indians (2-0) picked up wins over Felician and Mount Olive in the Salisbury Roundball Classic to open the season.

Antonio Houston, Rob Fields and Cliff Burns led Catawba in those games.

* Catawba is playing St. Augustine's at Charlotte's TWC Arena before a Charlotte Bobcats game against the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday, Nov. 24.

Tickets are on sale through Catawba's athletics department through 10 a.m on Nov. 24.

The Catawba game is at 2:30 p.m.

Seating is general admission for the Catawba game. Ticket holders may then exit the arena, go have some dinner and use the same tickets to come back into the arena with reserved seating for the Bobcats game at 7:30 game.

The tickets cost $20 and covers both games.

- Jayvee basketball

Salisbury's jayvee girls basketball team beat South Rowan 42-35 on Wednesday.

Najwa Allison led the Hornets with 12 points. Doreen Richardson had 10 and Marshe Partee nine.

South was led by Lauren "Goose" Miller with 12 and Nicole Barringer with eight.

- West football tickets

Pre-sale tickets for West Rowan's second-round home game against Statesville are $6. Tickets are $7 at the gate. No passes will be accepted.

- Baker's Dozen

West Rowan is ranked third in the latest 3A Baker's Dozen power ratings published by Arnold Solomon at NCPreps.com.

Rocky Mount and Dudley are head of the Falcons. South Point is fourth.

- Prep basketball

South Rowan's scheduled doubleheader at A.L. Brown has been pushed back from Friday to Tuesday because of Brown's home football game on Friday.

* Mt. Tabor's C.J. Harris has signed with Wake Forest. Harris scored 26 points Tuesday in a victory against Reagan.

* Davie County, led by senior guard Drew Absher, opens the season tonight at West Iredell.

- Prep wrestling

Carson's wrestling team defeated North Rowan 54-24.

Nick Golden (125 pounds), Tom Keoboupha (135), Anson Philips (140), Jacorian Brown (171) and Micah Honeycutt (heavyweight) won for the Cougars.

Phillips improved to 4-0.

* East Rowan defeated Concord 45-33. Results are in Scoreboard.

- Winter meeting

West Rowan will hold a parents meeting for winter sports on Monday, Nov. 24, in the cafeteria at 6 p.m.

- North Hills hoops

The North Hills boys defeated North Carolina School for the Deaf 63-36 on Tuesday.

Taylor Kriminger had 19 points and 10 rebounds. Zach Byerly scored 13 points for the Eagles (2-1).

* The North Hills girls downed N.C. School for the Deaf 62-35.

Laura Butner and Abbey Lane scored 18 points each. Caley Boggs scored eight, and Bekah Fero, Savannah Daniel, and Dana Salmon scored six apiece.

- Overseas basketball

Terris Sifford (West Rowan) scored 38 points and had 16 rebounds to lead his team to a two-point victory in Italy on Saturday.

- L-R men's basketball

Seniors Elliott McDowell and Donte Watson scored 18 points each to lead No. 17 Lenoir-Rhyne to a 79-62 victory against Queens on Wednesday.

- Women's basketball

Playing with a strained groin, Shayla Fields (Salisbury) scored only three points in an easy victory over Elon on Tuesday.

The injury isn't expected to be serious or long-term.

* Brittini Young, who played a year at East Rowan, scored 18 points to lead Mars Hill to an 84-61 victory against Limestone on Wednesday.

Young's father, Jim, coached at Davie and East Rowan and is now the boys coach at Providence Grove.

Jessica Blanford, who played at Robinson in Concord, added 14 points and 11 boards for the Lions.

- Cowher to address Pack

RALEIGH — Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher will deliver the fall commencement address at North Carolina State University, his alma mater.

The ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 17 at the RBC Center in Raleigh.

Cowher, currently an analyst for CBS Sports' "The NFL Today," led the Steelers in 2005 to their first Super Bowl title in 26 years. In 1995, at age 38, he became the youngest head coach to lead his team to the Super Bowl when the Steelers played the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XXX.

He spent 15 years with Pittsburgh before retiring in 2006.

He also played in the NFL from 1979 to 1984.

At N.C. State, Cowher was a starting linebacker, team captain and team most valuable player in his senior year. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1979.
