Area sports briefs: Salisbury volleyball wins

Salisbury defeated Thomasville 3-0 with strong play from Brielle Blaire (eight kills) and Olivia Smith (five aces). Cortney Gillispie had two aces, three kills and two digs. Patreece Lattimore had one kill and two digs while Bria Gardner finished with six kills and three blocks. Marlaweh Cole and Helen Nguyen lead the Hornets in digs.
• Carson swept West Rowan to improve to 26-1.
• The Cabarrus Stallions lost to Woodlawn 3-1.
Emily Messisco had 13 digs.
Anna Messisco had seven kills, three blocks and 19 assists.
Kendyl Parker had 13 kills and four blocks. Karley Long had three blocks.
A.L. Brown is tied for seventh in Tuesday’s state AP poll with Wilson Hunt.
Statesville is fourth and Concord is 10th after falling to Cox Mill.
Prep girls golf
Salisbury finished with the best score Tuesday at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The Hornets bested Central Davidson, Gray Stone and East Davidson with a 121. Central Davidson was second with a 153.
Medalist Isabella Rusher shot 35 and Grace Yatawara finished with a 37.
Central Davidson’s Victoria Hedrick shot 43.
Catawba was swept by Wingate in a SAC match Tuesday at Goodman Gym. The Bulldogs prevailed 25-18, 25-11, 25-20.
There will be a cyclocross race at Salisbury Community Park Sunday, Nov. 4.

Low ‘A’ Flight player with a net of 66.79 was Mike Harrigan. Low ‘B’ Flight player with a net of 67.43 was Melvin McGee.
Low ‘C’ Flight player with a net of 70.33 was John Cress. Low ‘D’ Flight player with a net of 69.08 was Leonard Robbins.
• In the eGolf Tour’s NorthStone Open, Salisbury’s Frank Adams III shot 70 and is tied for 25th after the first round. Will Collins (Salisbury) shot 72 and tied for 59th.
Knox defeated Erwin 32-8.
Martavio Rankin scored on a 66-yard and caught a 46-yard TD pass from Issac Baker. Nick Austin scored on a 34-yard run and a 42-yard punt return.
Baker ran for a conversion and threw conversion passes to Joe Steinman and Elijawan Oglesby.
Zarreck Barger, Torry James, Clarence Brownell, John Pruitt and Jordan Ward played strong upfront on offense.
Knox held the Eagles scoreless until the final minute.
Laderius Carter, Denver Venn, Nigel Brewer and Rankin had stellar defensive games .
Knox plays China Grove next week.
• Southeast beat Mooresville 14-8 in overtime Tuesday.
Cole Sifford scored a pair of touchdowns, including the game-winner. Jay Wilkerson added a two-point conversion.
Garrett Kennedy and Jamarius Hairston were offensive standouts.
Jaylin Williams grabbed an interception. Southeast travels to China Grove next week.
The high school girls basketball league continues at Carson on Saturday.
Participants are East Rowan, A.L. Brown, West Rowan, Carson, Northwest Cabarrus and North Meck.
Salisbury’s match with West Davidson that was postponed on Monday has been reset for Oct. 23.
The Statesville match has been moved to Oct. 18.
