Salisbury's girls tennis team closed a perfect conference season with a 9-0 victory against Providence Grove.

Sierra Davis, Mary Margaret Mills, Dzenita Sukurica, Mally Fisher, Sarah Shirley and Melaney Ramos won in singles for the Hornets (18-1, 14-0 CCC).

Sun Dragas-Sarah Truemper, Alex Yarborough-Anna Wooten and Suzanna Maxwell-Charlotte Mills won in doubles. Salisbury has a non-conference match with Hickory remaining on its schedule.

* East Rowan clinched second place in the NPC with a 6-3 victory against Statesville.

Hannah Kovach, Brittany Honeycutt, Caitlyn Fry and Devan Corpening won in singles for the Mustangs (10-1, 8-1 NPC). Honeycutt-Beck and Fry-Corpening won in doubles.

The Mustangs will face Mid-Piedmont Conference champion Southeast Guilford, the fifth-ranked team in 3A, in the first round of the dual-team playoffs.

* West Rowan lost 8-1 to Mooresville. Maggie Daniel improved to 6-3 in NPC matches with her victory at No. 4 singles.

- Prep soccer

Davie County lost to North Forsyth 7-2 in a CPC match on Wednesday.

Sergio Hernandez scored both goals for Davie (3-8-1, 0-4).

Ronnie Castellanos scored four goals and assisted on another for North Forsyth (7-3-1, 3-1).

- Prep golf

Salisbury's golfers shot 133 and won a match with Cannon School at River Run on Wednesday.

Catherine Parks shot 42 to lead the Hornets (15-2). Madison Kennedy (44), Lily Yatawara (47), Allison Lee (49) and Amber Lyerly (49) also competed for Salisbury.

Mimi Burke shot 41 for Cannon.

- North Rowan boosters

The North Rowan High School Booster Club will meet Monday, Oct. 7, at 7 p.m. in the media center.

All members and guests are encouraged to attend.

- Middle school football

West Rowan Middle's seventh-graders defeated Southeast 34-12.

Michael Pinkston threw a 46-yard TD pass to Devin Parks, and Parks also scored on 43-yard run.

Daisean Reddick scored from 22 yards out and returned an interception 62 yards for a score. Keyows Weeks scored on a 67-yard run.

Pinkston and Weeks added two-point conversions for West.

The Bulldogs (3-0) were led defensively by Weeks, Parks, Jesse Moore, Nick Collins, Malik Crudup, Teoz Mauney.

Darius Gabriel scored on a 3-yard run, and Cody Dale had a 1-yard TD run for the Patriots (3-1).

Chris Hassard made 10 tackles.

- Middle school softball

Erwin's softball team (6-0) rolled against North Rowan Middle 16-1.

Sydney Poole pitched another no-hitter and had five strikeouts.

Steffi Sides led the defense. Jesse Rummage had three hits to spark an 11-hit attack.

- Salisbury Academy

Salisbury Academy's soccer team lost 1-0 to Hickory Christian. Alex Wimmer and John Latimer led the defense for the Jaguars (2-2-1).

- Stallions football

The Cabarrus Stallions varsity football team lost to the Rock Hill Crusaders 21-6 in a game played in Chester, S.C.

Halfback Tavaris Sloop and fullback James Moose led the Stallions' rushing attack.

Quarterback Michael Phillips ran for the only Cabarrus touchdown.

* The Stallion jayvees defeated the Crusaders 34-8.

Tight end Andrew Jones scored three touchdowns. Dominik Sloop and Jonathan White scored a TD apiece and White added a pair of two-point conversions.

- Mixed martial arts

Former Catawba running back Rodney Wallace won his MMA match in the Vengeance Fighting Championships held recently at Cabarrus Arena.

Wallace was awarded a unanimous decision after scrapping three rounds with Ovince St. Preux.

Brian Keller (West Rowan), a member of Scotty Clawson's Rowan-based Revolution Fight Team, took care of Jason Wiggins in just 48 seconds with a submission choke hold.

- GARS event

Forty-seven GARS members played at McCanless on Monday.

Low 'A' flight player was Gary Wortman, with a net of 65.79.

Low 'B' player was O.J. Chandler, with a net of 60.56. Chandler shot four shots below his age.

Low 'C' player was Ralph Brown, with a met of 63.55. Low 'D' player was Joe Robinson, with a net of 68.03. Closest to the pin holes were won by Everett Hancock Sr. and Pete Ladd.

- Catawba athletics

UNC Pembroke (8-1-1) scored twice in the opening five minutes and beat Catawba 3-2 in women's soccer at Varsity Grounds on Wednesday.

Catawba (7-3) got goals from Tasha Wilhelm and Leala Ghorbani.

* Catawba's men's soccer match with Wingate was postponed by wet conditions. They'll play tonight at 7.

- Carolina Sluggers

The Kannapolis-based Carolina Sluggers won the Nations Baseball Fall State Championship in the Open Division for the second year in a row.

The Sluggers have posted an 11-1 record in recent tournaments.

The Sluggers include Tristan Wyatt, Cameron Noren, Jackson Raper, Alex Rodriguez, Mark Perkins, Coleman Trammell, Austin Corriher, Brandon Newton, Bailey Meeks and Cody Cline. Coaches are Darryl Noren, Ted Corriher, Rick Meeks and Norris Raper.

- Sellout for Apps

All tickets available to the general public for Saturday's homecoming football showdown between No. 2 Appalachian State University and No. 12 The Citadel in Boone are sold out.

- East YMCA programs

The East Rowan YMCA is taking registrations for basketball programs until October 25.

* Little Shooters Basketball is an introduction to the game for ages 4-6 and teaches sportsmanship as well as skills.

* The girls basketball program will teach fundamentals, principles and skills.

Leagues are for grades 2-8 and ages 7-14. Practice begins Nov. 1. The season begins Nov. 15.

- Pfeiffer volleyball

Pfeiffer (13-2, 7-0) beat Lees-McRae 3-2 on Wednesday as Brittany Dickens registered 14 kills.
