Area sports briefs: Salisbury soccer romps

Salisbury's soccer team stayed undefeated in the CCC with a 9-1 win over Providence Grove on Monday.

Michael Mazur scored three goals to lead the Hornets (8-3, 7-0).

Senior Oscar Bonilla scored twice and was matched by little brother Kenny, a freshman. Matt Cervantes and freshman B.J. Woods added a goal apiece. It was Woods' first goal.

- Valentin Nava scored midway through the first half and again in the 60th minute to help Carson beat East Rowan 2-1. Brandon Jolly had an assist for the Cougars (6-5-2 overall).

Will Mancil scored on a set play for East with six minutes remaining.

East outshot the Cougars 16-8.

- NPC golf

Lake Norman won an NPC golf match Monday with a score of 130.

West shot 148 for second. South shot 159 for third.

Katie Knepp led West with a 47. Ashlynn Perry shot 50 and Alex Mills had a 51. Courtney Barbee and Desirae Overcash shot 52s for South.

Lake Norman's Hayley Hammond was medalist with a 37.

- CCC tennis

Salisbury, the second-ranked team in 2A, traveled to Ragsdale, the eighth-ranked 3A squad, and won 6-3.

Brooke Johnson, Shea Comadoll, Joy Loeblein and Erika Nelson won singles matches for the Hornets (16-1). Comadoll-Loeblein and Johnson-Nelson prevailed in doubles.Nelson, a freshman, improved to 17-0 in singles. She's the only undefeated member of Salisbury's top six after top-seeded Hannah Lebowitz dropped to 13-1 with her 6-1, 6-1 loss against Ragsdale's Catherine Wood.

- NPC tennis

East Rowan defeated Northwest Cabarrus 7-2 in an NPC match.

Hannah Kovach, Brittany Honeycutt, Emily Beck, Caitlyn Fry and Devan Corpening won singles matches. Honeycutt-Beck and Fry-Corpening were doubles winners.

East plays its last conference match Wednesday at Statesville.

- West Rowan defeated South Rowan 5-3. Madison Rusher, Maggie Daniel, Ellen Watts and Tyler March won for West, as did the doubles team of Kate Ritchie-Sarah Teel.

Stephanie Chavez, Leslie Freeze and the tandem of Freeze-Catlin Halyburton won for South.

- CCC football

West Davidson defeated Providence Grove 28-12 in the CCC opener for both schools on Monday.

The Green Dragons rushed for 303 yards, led by Alex Grubb's 140-yard effort on 23 carries. William Rankin added 73 yards on 13 tries, and Patrick Phelps added 70 yards on 11 attempts.

Rankin scored on runs of 20 and 3 yards. Phelps scored from 4 yards out. West's other touchdown came on a 51-yard completion from James McCandies to Jon Jarvis. McCandies was 4-of-8 passing for 91 yards.

West's defense held Providence Grove to four first downs and minus-29 yards rushing. West (3-2, 1-0) travels to North Rowan on Friday.

- Middle School football

North Rowan Middle's eighth-graders beat Corriher-Lipe 6-0. Desmond Jackson scored for the Mavericks (3-0) on a 20-yard run.

Defensive stars for the Mavs were Will Robertson, T.J. Bates, T.J. Allen and Thomas Tucker. Deshore Lyles had an interception.

- North Middle's seventh-graders whipped the Yellow Jackets 46-0.

Mike Connor scored on runs of 12 and 25 yards for North (3-0). Jaquan Boyd had a 15-yard TD run, while Cameron Sifford hauled in a 15-yard scoring toss. Xavier Robinson and Kasoun Conley returned interceptions for scores. Brandon Rabon had a fumble recovery and two sacks.

- SAC football

Catawba will attempt to fill a fan bus for Saturday's football game at Newberry if there's enough interest.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. The cost, which includes a pregame meal, will be $35 for the bus. Money will be needed for a game ticket. The bus will leave the Shuford Stadium parking lot at 3 p.m. and return to Salisbury following the game. It will arrive at approximately 12:30 a.m.

* SAC football players of the week are Wingate receiver Shawn Barrett, Newberry linebacker Will Newell and Lenoir-Rhyne kicker Colin Corpe.

- GARS

Forty-seven GARS members played at McCanless on Monday.

Low 'A' flight player was Gary Wortman, with a net of 65.79.

Low 'B' player was O.J. Chandler, with a net of 60.56. Chandler shot four shots below his age.

Low 'C' player was Ralph Brown, with a met of 63.55.

Low 'D' player was Joe Robinson, with a net of 68.03.

Closest to the pin holes were won by Everett Hancock Sr. and Pete Ladd.
