Area briefs: West alums to extend careers

Recent West Rowan graduates John Noble and Malcolm Gaither are set to continue their football careers in college.

Noble, an offensive lineman, is headed to Virginia Union. Gaither, a tight end, is headed to Greensboro College.

More detailed info will appear in a future edition of the Post.

- West Rowan football

The first football practice at West Rowan High begins Friday at 5 p.m., and any players still needing equipment should show up at 4 p.m.

- Salisbury football

The first football practice at Salisbury begins Friday at 6 p.m. Players who haven't been issued equipment should arrive at 4 p.m.

- Intimidators lose

The Delmarva Shorebirds rallied for three runs in the eighth and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators 5-4 on Wednesday.

Kieran Pope's two-run double was the decisive blow.

Jim Gallagher homered for the slumping Intimidators, and Mark Fleisher had three hits.

The Intimidators are at Delmarva again tonight.

- Capra is back

Nick Capra, who managed the Kannapolis Intimidators in 2005, has been named to replace Chris Jones as the manager for the rest of this season.

Jones was relieved of duties on Monday.

- Catawba tennis

Catawba tennis coach Jeff Childress has announced three additional signees for the men's team.

Joining the squad for 2008-09 will be Carson's Cory Kluttz, Australian Matt King and Englishman Jan Roguska.

Kluttz played four years, two at South Rowan and the final two at Carson. He was a two-time all-county selection and was all-conference as a senior. Kluttz was a four-time scholar athlete.

King played No. 1 at Sydney Boys High School, where he earned zone and area honors. He helped his team to the Jones Cup title and also a U-16 championship.

Roguska attended Chellaston High School and played with the David Lloyd Derby Club. He was a member of the 2007 Derbyshire Division I League Champions and also qualified for the national division in 2008.

- Spencer All-Stars

The Spencer 9-&-10 baseball all-stars finished 4-2 in the Harrisburg All-Star Tournament and won the Spencer Invitational Tournament with a 5-0 record.

Spencer defeated East Rowan Blue 1-0 in the championship game.

Members of the Spencer team are Zac Bates, Corey Fries, Javin Goodine, Joseph Harrison, Caleb Heffner, Jake Herschler, Henderson Lentz, Robbie Monroe, Lee Sells, Hunter Shepherd, Corbin Smith, Trey Stoner and Brandon Walton.

The head coach is Terry Smith. Assistant coaches were Mark Monroe and Kirby Sells. Logan Stoner was the batboy.

- Spencer Little League

Spencer Little League will begin registration for fall baseball and girls softball on Friday, Aug. 1 from 4-8 p.m. at the Spencer Little League ballfield on 8th Street.

Additional registration times will be Saturday, Aug. 2 from 9 a.m.-2.p.m.; Friday, Aug. 8 from 4-8 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 9 from 9 a.m.-2.p.m. at the ballfield.

Coach pitch, junior, major and minor baseball, as well as girls softball leagues will be offered for ages 5-14. The registration fee is $30.

League play will begin the first week in September.

Spencer "Fall Ball" is offered as instructional leagues and allows players of all skill levels to learn and participate.

- North tennis

The first day of practice for North Rowan girls tennis will be Monday, Aug. 4 from 9-11 a.m

All girls wishing to play must attend this practice and have a current copy of their physical.

- Catawba softball

Catawba softball coaches will hold an open tryout for high school seniors on Saturday, Oct. 25.

The tryout will be held at Whitley Field on the Catawba campus.

Each participant must complete a tryout form, have a copy of their transcript and SAT/ACT score, must be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and must have a copy of a physical that was in the last six months prior to the date of the tryout. - NCHSAA Hall of Fame

The NCHSAA will induct the late Bill Bost of Catawba, Ken Browning of Durham, Richard Hicks of Durham, Mac Morris of Greensboro, Jan Stanley of Hendersonville, Tim Stevens of Raleigh, Billy Widgeon of Morehead City and Charlie Adams of Chapel Hill into the Hall of Fame.

- South Rowan soccer

South Rowan's soccer team will hold open tryouts for prospective players beginning Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Players should bring a completed physical. Tryouts will be held at the practice facility behind James Donnell Stadium.

- Greenway

The 11th Annual Run/Walk for the Greenway 5K attracted 188 participants. The Salisbury Parks and Recreation Department and the Salisbury Rowan Runners Club were hosts for the event.

Robert Marchinko and Lynn Pitson were overall winners. Awards went to the top three overall male and female runners. A $25 gift certificate from Athlete's Foot was awarded to Marchinko and Pitson. Awards were also given to the top three runners or walkers for the 5K and half- mile fun run for 16 age groups.

- Corbin golf tourney

Mary Seaford won low gross in this week's Corbin Hills Ladies Golf Association action.

Cindy Carmazzi took second, and Ruth Bowles was third.

Carolyn Ries won low net, with Joy Maughmer second and Bev Cobb third.

Donna DeVlieger won low putts.

- Carson golf

Carson girls golf coach Bill Moore announced practice starts Monday, Aug. 4, at 10:30 a.m. at McCanless.

Girls must have a physical.

- East fall leagues

East Rowan Little League fall baseball and softball signups are Aug. 3 from 2-4 p.m. at Faith Picnic Shelter behind Faith School.

Cost is $30 per player.

Divisions include Coach Pitch, Minors, Majors and Juniors (no T-ball division). Registration deadline is Aug. 8. Call 704-633-0311 for information.

- North Hills physicals

Physicals for North Hills athletes will be given Aug. 4-5. Call AD Brian Cook at extension 210 for more details.
