E-mail to a friend
If you're a Legion baseball fan, make sure you go to Graham tonight for the eighth game of the seven-game series between Burlington-Graham and Rowan.
That's right. The eighth game of a seven-game series.
Our illustrious Legion leaders have once again smacked us in the mouth, taken the focus off the field and made a mockery of what should be some fun-filled summer nights of simply enjoying kids play baseball.
When Area III got rid of bungling Bob Beeson as commissioner last year and replaced him with Lexington's Jim Lippard, we thought the teams could finally leave the politics and sudden rule-changing lunacy behind and just play ball.
Silly us.
What has happened to Rowan and South Rowan in the past week borders on the comical.
An e-mail was sent out before the two current series began between South and Randolph County and Rowan and Burlington. It made two things quite clear: suspended games would be picked up where they left off, and that each series must be finished by Saturday.
Neither has happened. Surprised?
-
Bad weather suspended Game 4 of Rowan-Burlington after a half-inning on Tuesday. As the e-mail declared, the game was picked up the next night at Newman Park and Rowan blistered Burlington 11-2 behind Matt Hall, who pitched Rowan's first nine-inning complete game of the season.
No problem with the ruling.
South Rowan faced the same scenario on Wednesday in Game 3 of its series. Bad weather ended things with South leading 3-1 in the fourth. Athletic officer Mike Fisher stood at home plate with Lippard, umpires Jerry and Howard Riddle and Dirk Swing, along with the two coaches, David Wright of South and Ronnie Pugh of Randolph.
Those seven people agreed, according to Fisher, that Game 3 would be picked up at 4 p.m. the next day and Game 4 would be played at 7.
But when Fisher arrived at South at 2 p.m. on Thursday, he was informed that, no, Lippard had changed his mind. The game would not be picked up in the fourth. It would start over. And there would be no second game.
Fisher was forced to inform a line of fans entering for the 7 p.m. game to go home.
"We lost $1,500," Fisher said. "I also had to pay umpires $720 because they came so many times for (Game 3). That would bankrupt other teams."
-
Pugh told the Post he talked with the commissioner on Thursday morning. He said Lippard "got to thinking."
Uh-oh.
"Fisher said he was told by Lippard, "We've been talking all day ..."
"I was like, 'We? I'm we.' "
It was mind-boggling to Fisher that decisions had been made regarding two teams and only one had been a part of the process.
Fisher immediately — and rightfully — filed a protest. He pointed out Rowan's win a night earlier was picked up from the point the weather stopped it. He also had a scorebook from 2002 when two games of South's series with Kannapolis were picked up where they left off.
Lippard e-mailed Fisher to say the protest had been denied (well, of course). He wrote that state commissioner Roy Waters had overruled his ruling.
Lippard wrote, "As commissioner, I accept the fact that I was wrong in suspending the game and apologize for not looking up the rule."
What?
You're the commissioner, Jim. Shouldn't you have talked to Waters before the series and discussed certain scenarios — like weather — so everyone would be on the same page?
-
Back in Salisbury on Friday, word spread quickly. Everyone sensed that Hall's Game 4 win would be stricken from the books because of the outcry from South. It was. And rightfully so. You can't have two sets of rules.
So Game 6 with Burlington became Game 4 again, and Rowan was suddenly down in the series 3-1.
It's a good bet the families of Hall and Billy Veal (who hit a grand slam in the game that didn't count) will never invite Lippard or Waters over for Thanksgiving dinner.
"I really wasn't too happy about it," Hall said, "because it was the best game I've pitched, period."
Rowan did manage to win on Friday, 12-11.
-
In Landis, about the same time, Caleb Shore was hitting a walk-off homer for a 6-5 South win. Randolph led the series 3-1 and would play host to Game 5.
Fisher was standing on the field afterward when he heard his P.A. man announce that Saturday's game would be at 2 p.m. He said Pugh had told his radio man to tell the P.A. announcer.
Fisher confronted Pugh, asking, "What are you talking about?"
Pugh said he had a scheduling conflict with the Asheboro Copperheads, a wooden-bat team. But rules set down before the season said starting times were 7 p.m. unless both teams agreed. Fisher would not.
He told Pugh, "I'm sorry, but if the people here know I'm accommodating you again, I'll have to move. They'll kill my dog."
Ho-hum, more calls to Lippard. The game began at 7 p.m. in Asheboro.
-
At Newman Park, it was an angry Rowan team that took the field on Friday and an even angrier crowd that watched a 15-14 win Saturday night.
Everyone seemed to have an editorial comment. One man entered the park and told the ticket taker, "I haven't missed a home game in 15 years. This is my last one," blaming Legion baseball for ruining yet another summer in the one county that supports Legion baseball like no other in the state.
-
After the win on Friday, Rowan coach Jim Gantt said, "They just better call Roy Waters and make sure this one really happened."
Nothing shocks Gantt anymore. Three years ago, during the same week in July, Beeson made up his own rules so his team, Wilkes, got the final playoff spot over South. Three days later, Beeson disqualified first-place Rowan because a man who identified himself as "Will Clark" informed him Rowan had an illegal player.
Now this.
"Sometimes," Hall sighed, "it just seems like it's not fair."
Then again, sometimes, it does works out, Matt. After Friday's win, Hall said, "If we win Saturday, I hope I get a chance on Sunday."
He will, as the starting pitcher in the decisive Game 7 tonight.
Or Game 8, as it turns out.

Rowan and South Rowan Legion Parents : Monday, July 28, 2008 1:27 PM
We as parents, along with our children, have faced many challenges over the years with changing rules, protests, etc. Let's band together and support each other as "Rowan's TWO Legion Teams." Do we have any recourse? If so, in the future, lets stand together as Rowan County, PERIOD! These young men (both teams) have great skills, character and determination! I have witnessed (both teams) WIN against all odds and I am so very proud of each player on (both teams). Why do we have so many players from these TWO teams being scouted and continuing their baseball careers on into college? Think about it! To my Rowan players, good luck at State, you deserve it! To my South Rowan players, hold your heads up high because you DESERVE to be there as well! You guys played with "true hearts" each time you stepped onto the field and at bat! (WOW! AWESOME HITS). To my Rowan County fans, PLEASE, show some class! Support ALL of these young men! Players, thank you for a wonderful and exciting year! PLAY BALL!

Rowan's TWO Legion Teams : Monday, July 28, 2008 8:00 AM
Do you Rowan fans not realize that South ROWAN is also a ROWAN county team? Are you that ignorant or just that obnoxious? Please. You HAVE to be the worst fans in the state. Don't try to tell me that you weren't "whining" when they took your game away. One of your "fans" said he wasn't coming back to another game because of it.

S. Rowan playing for the Area III title? : Monday, July 28, 2008 6:53 AM
The comment below about S. Rowan getting screwed. What series were you watching? South could't beat Randolph with four outfielders and Fisher umpiring.

It's not just the teams... : Monday, July 28, 2008 6:26 AM
What is it with Rowan County and all the dang whining? Lost gate at SR? Huh? Three nights and a days gate for a single game, not to mention concessions at each. Waaaaaa!! Proper rules were inforced on both Area III series. Why is that a problem? Because it wasn't in Rowan's favor? While we're at it...South Rowan simply was not good enough to be as far as they were and griping and spite wasn't going to save them from Randolph. Congrats to Rowan County though, they earned a hard fought priviledge to play in the states again.

How about appointing directors that aren't popping geritol and viagra everyday just to get through the day- some young blood needs to be put into these important positions that make these decisions. When they walk in the ballpark with a cane wearing their pants around their neck, you know their judgement is not going to be too great. They probably can't remember how they even got to the ballpark.

Right On Ronnie!! : Sunday, July 27, 2008 8:21 AM
RIGHT ON RONNIE!!!!!!!! No matter what happens tonight, the Rowan County team knows that they have beat BG 4 times. It doesn't matter what Lippard and "God of Legion Baseball"--I mean, Waters have to say. BG has fought hard and is a good team but to mess with kids the way these guys are doing, is it any wonder why kids are going to play other types of summer ball such as showcase? At least there are rules and the rules are, for the most part adhered to and the tournament directors are knowledgable of those rules. If Waters is "the all-knowing" and final word, why doesn't he come down here and tell these boys face-to-face his decison? To the South Rowan team: you got the bad end of this also. Keep your heads up!! You are a great team with a lot of character. You were put behind the 8-ball from the get-go. As someone said previously "you didn't even get kissed before this one." Go ROWAN & SOUTH ROWAN legion!!!!!!!

Thank you Ronnie Gallagher for writing this article. It's the people like Jim Lippard, Bob Beeson and Ronnie Pugh who give American legion Baseball a bad name. This is supposed to be for the kids who choose to spend their whole summer to play a great game. Every summer there seems to be some incident that involves a bad decision. If the Area III commisioner has no authority, then why do we need one? It should be like an umpire's decision: He makes a call, right or wrong, and everyone has to live with it. If both teams knew about the decision on susupended games in the beginning of the series by the email, then everyone was on the same playing field. Why didn't Ronnie Pugh question the ruling before the first game instead of when his team was down 3-1? Sounds dirty to me. But of course, look how he did last year when he forfeited his first home game, but Rowan still had to go back up there for Game 2. I wouldn't trust anything he's involved in. I do wonder why it appears our Rowan legion leaders just seem to back down and take what's handed them. Do we not have any recourse? What about on a national level? Legion ball is already losing players to other avenues, this is just kicking them out the door. The players and their families of all Rowan players - Rowan and South Rowan are tired of all the controversy every year. It's not fair to the kids.If Americah Legion Basseball wants to save it's good name and continue a wonderful tradition in Rowan County, some changes are going to have to be made or it's going to die out very quickly.

Quit crying : Sunday, July 27, 2008 5:27 AM
I wonder if Fisher can produce a copy of that email and prove it was dated before the series and sent to all teams. It sounds more like a fat guy looking for excuses. How much travel money do you think Randolph used driving to S. Rowan 5 days in a row? Gas is more expensive then 3 umpires. Maybe Fisher should have got off his butt and fixed his field. Just think, 3 more outs and South would have won. Too Bad!!! Look into buying a field tarp before next years 3rd round loss. See everyone in Burlington to watch "The Real Rowan County" play.

Read a rule book : Sunday, July 27, 2008 4:41 AM
Mike Fisher needs to read a rule book once and a while. There is no such thing as a suspended game unless you are in tournament play and not series play. Is that email sent to all teams true? If thats the case, when did Bob Beason come back to work? Either way, if Mike had a clue he would have worked his butt off to fix his field and get three more outs to have a complete game and a 3-1 win instead of calling it off 15 minutes after it started raining. Changing rules, protests, and adults acting like 3 yr olds...Gotta love Legion baseball in late July.

If a Dixie Youth or Little League tournament were run by Lippard or Waters, they would be run out of town on a rail(secret meetings??;fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants logic??)they know weather is a factor this time of year ---as a Kannapolis parent, I can see how frustrating this is for our Rowan County brothers, both teams of them....I hope that the baseball gods give Coach Gantt and his fine players the victory that is due them, and on into the NC State tourney
