Area sports briefs: Intimidators fall

The Kannapolis Intimidators were held hitless after the third inning and were pounded 11-4 by Augusta at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Saturday.

Augusta rapped 18 hits and avoided a sweep. Vladimir Frias had four hits.

The Intimidators open a series with the Rome Braves today at 5:05 p.m. Rehabbing major leaguer Freddy Garcia will pitch for the Intimidators.

n N.C. Preps Football

The18th annual North Carolina Prep Football News will soon be readily available.

The $15 publication features preseason N.C. Player of the Year K.P. Parks, West Rowan's tailback, on the cover.

The books are now on sale at Phidippides in Concord and are expected to be at Dale's Sporting Goods in China Grove on Wednesday.

West Rowan is picked No. 1 in 3A. A.L. Brown is No. 3 in 3A.

West Rowan is picked to win the 3A North Piedmont Conference, while the Wonders are the preseason favorite in the 3A South Piedmont.

Thomasville is the choice in the 2A Central Carolina Conference. Mount Tabor is the favorite in the 4A Central Piedmont Conference. Albemarle is the pick in the 1A Yadkin Valley Conference.

West Rowan's Parks, Chris Smith, Tim Pangburn and Jon Crucitti are members of the all-classification preseason All-State team.

North Rowan's Javon Hargrave is a preseason 1A All-State pick. Parks is the preseason 3A Player of the Year and is joined on the 3A preseason All-State squad by Pangburn, Smith and Crucitti. Davie receiver Joe Watson is on the preseason 4A All-State team.

Preseason choices for conference player of the year honors include Parks in the NPC, Watson in the CPC, Northwest Cabarrus' Jeremy Cannon in the SPC and Salisbury's Romar Morris in the CCC.

n BoSox in action

The Bases Loaded BoSox 14-under baseball team saw their 28-game winning streak end in their opening game in a tournament in Charleston.

The BoSox lost to The Heat, the top-ranked team in South Carolina 3-1. Dillon Parker homered for the BoSox. Tanner Bigham had a double. The BoSox lost first baseman Jordan Goodman to a knee injury.

The BoSox won their second outing 4-3, with a two-run double by Grayson Miller providing the deciding runs.

Miller pitched a complete game and Connor Bridges and Parker had two hits each in an 8-6 victory against Pro Level Sports. In a 12-1 victory against the Bluffton Beast, the BoSox smacked 13 hits.

The BoSox face the Carolina Hammers as the tournament continues today.

n Minor leagues

Jerry Sands (Catawba) hit his 11th homer for Ogden on Saturday.

n Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus,UNC) had three RBIs in Clinton's 8-2 win on Saturday.

n Chris Ahearn (Catawba) had a double for the Padres rookies in the Arizona League on Saturday.

n South football

South Rowan's first day of football practice is Aug 1. at 5 p.m. Players are to report to the field house with an updated physical. Contact coach Jason Rollins at 704-762-0268.
