Area sports briefs: Intimidators win

Brandon Short's inside-the-park homer in the eighth tied the game, and Dan Black's homer over the right-field wall lifted the Kannapolis Intimidators to an 8-7 victory against Augusta on Friday.

The Intimidators overcame a four-run deficit.

Short hit two homers, and Josh Phegley also connected.

Kyle Bellamy (1-0) got his first professional win, pitching one nerve-racking inning. Dan Albritton made his 2009 debut and had a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.

n The Myrtle Beach Pelicans banged out 17 hits, including four homers, and routed the Winston-Salem Dash 10-1.

n The Charlotte Knights rallied to defeat Rochester 2-1 in 10 innings at the Castle.

Brian Anderson homered in the ninth for the Knights to force extra innings. Josh Kroger had the game-winning hit in the 10th.

n Local golf

Salisbury's Roy Dixon and Alex Nianouris will play in the Carolinas Junior on July 28-30 at Pinehurst's Country Club of North Carolina.

n Hole-in-one

Charles Roberts made a hole-in-one on the 140-yard No. 3 hole at McCanless on Wednesday.

Roberts used a 9-wood to record his first career ace. The shot was witnessed by including Gilbert Sprinkle, Gary Wortman, and Winston Smith. Roberts was playing in the "Quarter Guys" group.

n Football mini-camp

A five-day football mini-camp at Corriher-Lipe Middle School on Aug. 3-7. Camp is for grades 7-8 and will run from 6:30-8 p.m. daily. Contact Craig Honeycutt for information at 980-521-2646.n Pro football

Brad Roach (Catawba) will miss the rest of the Arena Football League2 season after suffering a severely separated shoulder.

Roach was playing with the Mahoning Valley Thunder in Youngstown, Ohio, and was making his third start at quarterback when he was slammed into the turf.

n Carson athletics

The Cougar Booster Club of Carson High will meet Monday, Aug. 3, at 6 pm.

Anyone wanting to be involved with the boosters should attend this first meeting.
