A new champion will be crowned today in the 30th annual Horace Billings Rowan County Amateur golf tournament at Corbin Hills Golf Club.

Defending champion Keith Dorsett was eliminated in the third round, and it was his brother, Michael, who did him in by 1-up.

Michael Dorsett, trailing by two holes, won the 13th and 14th to pull even with his brother, and then took the 16th hole. It took a birdie on the 18th to protect his lead and win the match.

Michael Dorsett had six birdies and finished 3-under.

Michael Dorsett edged Roy Dixon 1-up in his first match Saturday. At the same time, Keith advanced with a match over Joe Harrell by 6 and 4.

Michael Dorsett will face David Boger in today's semifinals at 8:06 a.m.

Boger used sub-par golf to defeat Rick Adams, 8 and 6, and Matt Graham, 6 and 5, to advance to the semifinals.

The other semifinal match will send Ronnie Eidson against Glenn Dixon.

Eidson reached the semifinals with a 3 and 2 win over six-time winner Gary Miller and a 1-up decision over Glenn Dixon, who ousted Steve Gegorek, 4 and 3, and Dusty Holder, 1-up, in two earlier matches. Eidson recorded seven birdies in his final match. Dixon played well with four birdies.

The Dorsett-Boger and Eidson-Dixon winners will meet at 1 p.m. for the championship.

12:30 — Championshipn Shive shinesCorbin Shive, a rising senior at East Rowan, pitched the South Charlotte Panthers to a 3-1 win against the Franklin Outlaws in the World Wood Bat Association 16-under Championships in Georgia.

Shive pitched a four-hitter and struck out seven.

Shive is 6-0 this summer, and was also praised by Panthers assistant coach Empsy Thompson for his hitting this summer.

n East tennis practiceEast Rowan girls tennis practice will begin Monday, August 11, at 6 p.m. at the Erwin courts.

Girls will need to have a physical to participate.

n Intimidators campThe Kannapolis Intimidators have scheduled a specialty hitting and pitching camp on Aug. 15-16 in which campers learn directly from Intimidators coaches Andy Tomberlin and Larry Owens.

The camp runs from 9-11 a.m. On Friday, the campers go through a hitting clinic with Tomberlin. On Saturday, it's a pitching clinic with Owens.

For more information or to register, call the Intimidators front office at 704-932-3267. The cost of the camp is $100 for both days. The camp is for ages 12-18.

Parents and coaches are encouraged to attend/participate/videotape and ask questions at the camp with their child or player to ensure they get the most from the experience.

n Intimidators fallThe Kannapolis Intimidators lost their sixth straight game on Saturday when they fell 3-1 to Charleston.

The Intimidators were swept in a four-games series and matched their longest losing skid of the season.

The Intimidators managed just one run on four hits. The run was on a solo homer by Mark Fleisher in the sixth inning. The homer was Fleisher's ninth. Sergio Morales had two hits.

Charleston's Dellin Betances got the win with six shutout innings and fanned five.

Charlie Shirek was the tough-luck loser for Kannapolis (3-5).

The Intimidators welcome the Savannah Sand Gnats to open a four-game series today.

n Rowan Little League fall ball Rowan Little League will take sign-ups July 26- Aug. 16 at Godley's Garden Center for its fall baseball and softball leagues.

Online registrations are currently being accepted at http://www.eteamz.com/rowanlittleleague.

Fall ball is for ages 5-14. Cost is $30. Ages are as of April 30, 2009, and games begin after Labor Day.

Rowan Little League boundaries now include players that live north of the Kannapolis city limits and that are west of I-85.

n Minor leagues Spencer Steedley (East Rowan) pitched a scoreless inning for Fort Myers on Friday and struck out one.

n David Thomas (Catawba) is batting .321 for Vancouver. He was 2-for-4 on Friday.

n Bobby Parnell (East) was the scheduled starting pitcher for Binghamton last night in a game that was stopped by rain.

n Coastal Plain LeagueWade Moore (West Rowan) had two hits for Forest City in a 5-4 victory over Edenton on Friday.
