ST. LOUIS — Troy Glaus hit two homers and Rick Ankiel and Joe Mather added one each — all off San Diego's Jake Peavy — and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Padres 4-3 on Thursday night.

It was only the second time in his seven-year career that Peavy allowed four homers in a game. The other was July 9, 2003, at Arizona. Peavy (7-6), who had won his previous four starts against the Cardinals, gave up eight hits and struck out seven in seven innings.

Kyle Lohse (12-2) won his ninth straight decision, the most for St. Louis since Chris Carpenter won 13 in a row in 2005. Lohse pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Ryan Franklin pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 17 opportunities. He gave up a run on consecutive doubles by Kevin Kouzmanoff and Chase Headley before retiring the next three batters, stranding the tying run at third base.

Glaus tied it 1-all in the second with his first homer, snapping Peavy's 15-inning scoreless streak. The Cardinals took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on back-to-back shots by Ankiel, his 21st, and Glaus, his 17th.

Mather, a rookie pinch-hitting for Lohse, homered in the seventh.

Glaus has hit four home runs in his last 16 at-bats. It was his 27th multihomer game and second this season. He did it July 2 against the New York Mets.

Glaus has four homers in his career off Peavy and is batting .466.

It was the second time the Cardinals hit back-to-back homers this season. Albert Pujols and Ankiel did it against Cincinnati on July 11.

Rockies 5, Pirates 3

DENVER — Chris Iannetta homered and drove in three runs and Ubaldo Jimenez pitched seven strong innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Jeff Baker was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs for the Rockies, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Brian Fuentes struck out the side in the ninth for his 15th save this season and 100th of his career.

Jimenez (5-9) struck out four and won for the fourth time in his last six decisions. He retired 11 of the last 12 batters he faced. The only batter to reach after the third inning was wiped out in an inning-ending double play in the sixth.

AMERICAN

BALTIMORE — Gary Sheffield and Brandon Inge hit two-run homers, Marcus Thames added a solo shot, and Detroit beat Baltimore 6-5 on Thursday night.

Kenny Rogers (7-6) allowed four runs and 11 hits in six innings for the Tigers, who have won 24 of 35 since June 6.

Todd Jones, the fifth Detroit pitcher, worked the ninth for his 18th save. After allowing a one-out sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, he retired Kevin Millar on a ground ball.

Melvin Mora homered for the Orioles, who have dropped eight of nine.

Baltimore starter Garrett Olson (6-5) gave up five runs, seven hits and four walks in six innings.

Inge gave the Tigers a 5-4 lead in the sixth with his seventh homer that followed a two-out single by Edgar Renteria. It was his first home run on the road since May 17, 2007, at Boston.

Thames connected off Dennis Sarfate in the seventh to make it 6-4.

Sheffield put the Tigers up 2-0 in the second with his 486th career homer and first since June 26.
