From staff reports

The entry deadline is Wednesday for the 30th annual Horace Billings-Rowan Amateur at Corbin Hills Club, with qualifying taking place Friday through Sunday.

Golfers can register for the tournament, which is a match-play event, at Corbin Hills. Pairings and tee times for qualifying will be announced later this week.

- Hamrick passes away

Dan Hamrick, longtime coach and administrator at Landis High and A.L. Brown, died Monday morning.

A story on Hamrick will appear in a future edition of the Post.

- Legion playoffs

Aubrey Meadows pitched a complete game and struck out 14 batters as second-seeded Mooresville defeated No. 7 Kannapolis 6-2 on Monday in their playoff opener.

John Tuttle pitched well over eight innings for Kannapolis, but Mooresville benefited from three home runs. Joe Manser went 3-for-3 for the Moors, including a homer on Tuttle's first pitch. Dylan West and Garrett Braun also connected.

Jacob Wright hit a two-run homer in the eighth for Kannapolis, which plays at home tonight.

- Livingstone personnel

Livingstone athletic director Lamonte Massie announced more changes within the athletic department Monday, one day after announcing four additions to the football coaching staff.

Patricia Gilliam has taken over as assistant athletic director of compliance and senior women's administrator. Gilliam will be in charge of the compliance office and has worked with athletic departments at Fayetteville State, Hampton and St. Augustine's.

Andrew Harvey joins the staff as sports information director.

"I believe we have some very good people in place to make Livingstone an outstanding athletic department," said Massie, who's also the head football coach. "We have new energy and people that see the glass three-quarters full. It takes time to turn this ship in the direction we want it to go, but I believe we have the right staff members in place that support our vision of where we want to take LC athletics."

- Rowan junior golf

Alex Nianouris shot an even-par 71 on Monday to grab the overall first-round lead at the Rowan Junior Open.

Nianouris, competing in the 14-15 boys division, led Chad Blakenbeker by two strokes after one round at The Club at Irish Creek. The second round will begin today at Warrior at 8 a.m.

Nick Buckwell, playing in the 16-18 division, stood third overall with a 78, while Hayley Hammond (75), Abby Shipley (82) and Carolina Dula (83) paced the girls.

- Intimidators lose

Reid Fronk hit a walkoff homer to lead Columbus to a 7-5 victory over the Kannapolis Intimidators on Monday. Mark Fleisher homered for the Intimidators (11-7).

- South YMCA baseball

The South Rowan YMCA is accepting registration through July 19 for its youth baseball league.

The program is for ages 6-12 as of April 30 of this year and has three divisions — coach pitch for ages 6-7, player pitch for 8-9 and player pitch for 10-12 (12-year-olds cannot pitch.) Games begin Aug. 4. Cost is $37 for members and $60 for potential members. For more information contact Gary Earnhardt at (704) 857-7011.
