Area Sports Briefs: Seager reaches contract agreement

Kyle Seager (NW Cabarrus, UNC) has reached a contract agreement with the Seattle Mariners and will pass up his senior year in Chapel Hill.

Seager was in Arizona on Friday finalizing physicals and medical paperwork. The 82nd pick in the draft, Seager was selected by Seattle as a second baseman.

Seager plans to sign Monday and fly out Tuesday morning to Clinton, Iowa, to report to the Clinton LumberKings of the Class A Midwest League. Seager will skip the rookie-league level as part of his contract agreement.

Catawba-bound lefty pitcher Nick Lomascolo dominated for six innings, and Mooresville rolled over Concord 12-2 in the opener of a best-of-five, first-round series played at Mooresville High on Friday.

Lomascolo allowed three hits, struck out 11 and allowed an unearned run. Catawba signee Ross Whitley had a bases-clearing double for the Moors, who won their fourth straight. Chase LeVan had three hits. Eric Manser had two.

Garrett Furr, another Catawba signee, took the loss.

Mooresville's Ian Walters and Concord's Dalton Shuford are the probable pitchers for Game 2 tonight at Central Cabarrus High.

n Stanly County used a nine-run first inning to hold off Lexington 12-8 in a first-round opener played in Albemarle on Sunday night.

The teams square off at Holt-Moffitt Field tonight.

n Minors: Intimidators win in 14

Kannapolis swept Hagerstown with a 6-2, 14-inning victory on Friday. Jon Gilmore had the game-winning hit.

n Ogden's Jerry Sands (Catawba) had four hits Friday, including a triple, to raise his batting average to .489. ... Kane County's David Thomas (Catawba) had an RBI double. ... Savannah's Timmy Smith (Catawba) pitched two scoreless in his South Atlantic League debut.

Coach Joe Hubbard's Northwest Cabarrus Baseball Camp runs July 6-9 from 9-1 daily. Walkup registration is OK on July 6.
