Binghamton Mets pitcher Bobby Parnell (East Rowan) has been chosen to represent the Northern Division in the Double-A Eastern League All-Star Game.

The game will be played July 16 at the home of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.

Parnell has a 3.04 ERA since the start of May, giving him a 4.04 mark for the season. He has won his last three starts, pushing his record to 8-4 and putting him in a tie for third for victories among Eastern League hurlers.

Parnell has also had opportunities to hit, and he's batting .154 this season. Two starts ago, he went 2-for-3 at the plate.

- Carson Palomino

Carson's Palomino baseball team squared its record at 4-4 with a pair of victories on Thursday.

Carson beat the Rockingham Reds 11-6. Zach Grkman, Julio Zubillaga, Gunnar Hogan and Jeremy Mullis had two hits each for Carson.

Tyler Freeze pitched five innings with three strikeouts, and winner Will Misenheimer worked four innings with two strikeouts.

Nicholas Glass pitched five innings and struck out four in an 11-8 victory over the Greensboro Diamondbacks.

Mullis and Jesse Park also pitched. Park nailed down the last three outs and struck out two batters.

Grkman, Hogan and Matt Smith had two hits each.

Carson plays another doubleheader in Greensboro this weekend.

- Mooresville wins

Mooresville's American Legion baseball team topped Statesville 4-1 on Thursday.

Scottie Williams was the winning pitcher. Joe Manser hit a three-run homer, and Jon Crucitti added a solo blast.

Mooresville will be the No. 2 seed for the playoffs that begin on Monday. The loss finished the season for the Owlz.

- Shive shines

Corbin Shive, a rising senior at East Rowan, pitched the South Charlotte Panthers to a 4-0 victory over the Dugout Tigers (Ga.) in the World Wood Bat Association 18-under Championships held in Marietta, Ga.

Shive (4-0) pitched 61/3 shutout innings. He allowed four hits and struck out 10.

- China Grove all-stars

China Grove's 9-year-old Cal Ripken League all-star team includes Issac Bell, Austin Chrismon, Cameron Corriher, Niko Cosgriff, Colby Harrington, Cal Hubbard, Luke Johnson, Walker Joyce, Issac Miles, Dillon Norton, Clifton Welch and Hayden Wilson.

The team begins play in the state tournament in Statesville on July 11.

- Legion All-Star Game

The Area III All-Star Game will be held at Newman Park at 7 p.m. on Saturday.

Players voted to the Southern Division team are Rowan County's Trey Holmes, Justin Roland, Philip Miclat and Tanner Brown; South Rowan's Randy Shepherd; Kannapolis' Jacob Wright and Ryan Overcash; Mocksville's Chris Kinard and Zack Russell-Myers; Mooresville's Nathan Abraham, Sam Allen, Jon Crucitti, Nick Lomascolo, Eric Manser, Joe Manser, Aubrey Meadows and Aaron Meadows; Concord's Garrett Furr, Dalton Shuford and Michael Tancini; Lexington's Jarrett Albright, Zack Briggs, Alex Grubb, Matt Tysinger and Clay Watson; Stanly's Nathan Furr and Jordan Sells; and Statesville's Aaron Johnson.

- Intimidators win

Dale Mollenhauer hit for the cycle to lead the Kannapolis Intimidators to a 10-4 victory over Lake County on Thursday in front of 3,454 fans at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium.

The East Carolina product tripled in the first, homered in the fifth, doubled in the sixth and singled in the eighth.

- Fleming meeting

Tasker Fleming, North Rowan's new football coach, will meet the boosters during a club meeting Monday.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and be held in the school library.

Ads for the football program should be brought. Refreshments will be served.

- Pioneer Football

The Pioneer Football League was established in 2000 to give home-schooled and private-schooled boys ages 12-18 the opportunity to play regulation football, to learn sportsmanship and to develop athletic skills. The local PFL team is the Cabarrus Stallions. The Stallions kick off the 2008 season Saturday, July 12, at 10 a.m. at Dorton Park, 5790 Poplar Tent Road, Concord.

Come for fun, razzle football games and free food. Coaches, parents, players and cheerleaders will be there to answer questions about the program, collect player registrations and to raffle off one FREE player scholarship.

- Area golf

Lauren Smith (Salisbury) lost 5 and 4 to Courtney Taylor in the consolation final of the Carolinas Junior Girls Championship in Southern Pines.

Haley Stephens of Greer, S.C., beat high school teammate Vanessa Koechli by a 3-and-2 mark in the championship final.

- McCanless tourney

McCanless Golf Club played host to the Junior Mac Tournament on Thursday, and the winners were Bryson Sprinkle (43, 9-under division), Logan Shuping (39, 10-13 division) and Aaron Rogers (43, 14-up division). Evan Neas was second in the 10-13 division with a 47.

- Rowan Amateur

The entry deadline for the 30th annual Horace Billings Rowan Amateur golf tournament at Corbin Hills is Wednesday. The tournament takes place July 18-20.

The field will be made up of defending champion Keith Dorsett and the low 31 qualifiers. Golfers must be a resident of Rowan County or a member of a golf club located in the county.

Seventeen golfers own Rowan titles, with Gary Miller leading the way with six.

- Country Club golf

The Salisbury Country Club will decide its golf champion in a three-day tourney that begins today. Each round of the event will begin at 8:30 a.m.

- Junior golf

The first Rowan Junior Open golf tournament will be played Monday and Tuesday at two area clubs.

The first round will be played at The Club at Irish Creek at Kannapolis, and the final round will be played at Warrior Club in China Grove.

Competition will be for boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 18. About 50 players have already entered. The entry deadline is today.

- Catawba hoops

Men's coach Jim Baker is directing the 44th annual Catawba Basketball Camp along with assistant coach Bill Haggerty.

Individual camps for boys and girls ages 7-15 and beginners camps for boys and girls ages 5-8 will be held at Catawba from July 7-10and at Concord's Covenant Classical from July 14-17.Call 704-637-4473 for information or go to www.e-timeout.com to register online.

- Catawba baseball

The Catawba Future Stars Baseball Camp for ages 8-14 will be held July 21-24 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and costs $195.

- Hoops Unlimited

Applications are still being accepted for the July 7-10 session of the 15th Annual Hoops Unlimited Basketball Camp for rising second-fifth grade boys and girls.

The camp will be held at North Hills Christian School.

The cost of the all-day camp is $95 and includes a camp T-shirt and "all you can eat lunch each day."
